a must have for step 2 CK

I used the first edition of this book for step 2 CK. It was my only and main study tool while i prepared for CK. I went through it 3 times before my test. went thru the high yield questions. I experienced a 20 point increase from my scores in step 1 and 2.
I highly recommend this. with the added high yield images,this book is a MUST HAVE!.

This book is concise and to the point. It offers more details than master the board or first aid. This should be the primary source for step 2 and 3. This book has what it takes to do well on this exam!

Lacks coverage of new features

The product description for AWDWR4 includes this paragraph:

"Rails 4 introduces a number of user-facing changes, and the ebook has been updated to match all the latest changes and new best practices in Rails. This includes full support for Ruby 2.0, controller concerns, Russian Doll caching, strong parameters, Turbolinks, new test and bin directory layouts, and much more."

Shockingly, AWDWR4 includes no discussion of some of the aforementioned changes, including Turbolinks and strong parameters, which are the first two subjects I searched for in my copy of AWDWR4. The authors simply included a link to Turbolinks' GitHub repo, and there is literally not one mention of the term "strong parameters" in the whole book! AWDWR4 seems to be a hastily-updated version of AWDWR3, which I also own.

If you already know Rails 3, I recommend that you not waste your time or money on AWDWR4. After realizing that AWDWR4 is worthless, I bought PDF copies of Rails 4 in Action and The Rails 4 Way. (The print versions of these books are available for pre-order at Amazon.) These two books are currently in beta, but they're already over 700 pages long and they include sections devoted to strong parameters, Turbolinks, etc.

In the past, I bought Pragmatic books without bothering to evaluate them beforehand because their books had always been high-quality. This seems to no longer be the case, and I won't buy another Pragmatic book until one is recommended to me by someone I trust. Pragmatic joins O'Reilly in this regard.

Update (2014-01-22):

In response to a comment on my review, I compared the indexes in AWDWR3 and AWDWR4. What motivated me to compare the indexes was the fact that AWDWR4's index doesn't include entries for either strong parameters or Turbolinks, which is surprising for a Rails 4 book. I checked the first pages of both indexes and here's what I found:

AWDWR3: Action Controller, 309, 321-332
AWDWR4: Action Controller, 309, 319-330
Same number of pages. (These are the pages in AWDWR4 that should have included discussion about strong parameters.)

Good for beginners

This is the second book on Rails that I purchased to learn new features in Rails 4 (the first one being Ruby on Rails Tutorial - I bought the paper copy which covers Rails 3 but the free online version covers Rails 4). As someone relatively new to Rails, I found this book easy to follow. I tried all the sample code and it worked without any problems. The explanations accompanying code is clear for the most part. Since I already learned the Rails way of doing things in Ruby on Rails Tutorial book, the main value addition in this book for me was in Part III - Rails in Depth - a lot is discussed and several ideas tossed around for someone to use in a real project.

The main downside of this book is that some of the treatment is superficial. For example, an authentication mechanism is developed in the book which is good for illustrative purposes but it's not replaced with a relevant gem that's ready to use (such as devise). This book uses MiniTest for the most part for automated tests. In my work place MiniTest is considered to be too basic in terms of functionality/scope and therefore cucumber/rspec/capybara are used instead. This book barely mentions these gems and capybara is not mentioned at all. Another thing to note is that this book does not use TDD but develops tests as after the fact - which is not necessarily bad in itself (depending on your style of development) but something to be aware of.

If you are a beginner to Rails, you can checkout either this book or Ruby on Rails Tutorial book - both will get you started. If you have preference towards TDD, then go with Ruby on Rails Tutorial. Personally I liked the TDD style of Ruby on Rails Tutorial. I suspect that neither of these two books will be very useful to intermediate/advanced Rails developers.

A great starter for a rails noob

I have some experience for C# .net web development as a business information technology student. I'm a complete noob with practically zero knowledge of ruby and ruby on rails. Regardless I find this book very intuitive to follow, and I think if you know any object oriented language to some degree, you can pick this up and start learning ruby and rails easily at the same time.

To make the point clear, I think this book is NOT for total newbies due to the way many concepts are just thrown around without explanation, but great for those who know the basic programming concepts already and just want to read something that makes them see the big picture of rails and get started as fast as they can.

I think I won't be going back to .NET for a long time..

He was a faculty member at Northeastern University from 1969 through 1998 and held several academic positions including Professor of Electrical Engineering, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Director of the Graduate School of Engineering, and Chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His professional experience and interests focus in areas of digital communications and digital signal processing. He is co-author of several successful books, including DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS, 5E (2008), INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING, 4E (2007); DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING LABORATORY (1991); ADVANCED DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (1992); DIGITAL PROCESSING OF SPEECH SIGNALS (2000); COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS ENGINEERING, 2E (2002); DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING USING MATLAB V.4, 3E (2010); CONTEMPORARY COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS USING MATLAB, 2E (2004); ALGORITHMS FOR STATISTICAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (2002); FUNDAMENTALS OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS (2005).

Masoud Salehi received BS from Tehran University and MS and PhD from Stanford University, all in Electrical Engineering. Before joining Northeastern University, he was with the Electrical Engineering Departments at Isfahan University of Technology and Tehran University both in Iran. During 1988-1989 he was a visiting professor at the Information and Communication Theory Research Group, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, where he did research in network information theory and coding for storage media. In 1989 he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Northeastern University. Dr. Salehi is the coauthor of the textbooks "Communication Systems Engineering," "Communication Systems with MATLAB," "Fundamentals of Communication Systems," and "Digital Communications." His main areas of research interest include information theory and coding.

Sparse, laden with typos/errors

Frankly, this book is really poor. The material presented is sparse and sometimes ambiguous, and if your professor teaches straight from the book without providing any examples/information of his or her own, you will likely struggle.

Perhaps more importantly, there are *many* typos in the problems at the end of each chapter (which the professor has to continually correct - this isn't just my own interpretation). Scale is frequently wrong (Hz vs. kHz vs. Mhz, etc.), leading to nonsensical or unobtainable solutions, variables get mislabeled, and more. These errors make the book even more difficult to learn from, as the lack of confidence in the practice problems really compounds the students' sense of uncertainty.

I am kind of shocked that the book was published in this state. It's a first edition, so a certain lack of polish is to be expected, but c'mon guys, I shouldn't feel like I'm fighting an uphill battle to learn the material.

By way of fairness, I will say that the book is very well organized and structured, and I think the block diagrams in particular, depicting a signal's path through the described system, are very informative.

Regarding my credibility, I am in the very top of my class at a fairly new but well-respected School for Engineering, studying EE.

Skips through important concepts too quickly

I am using this book in 2 courses - Signals & Random Processes, and Digital Transmission. Although the material is very in-depth, unless you already know the material and just need a refresher, you will probably find out that it's very hard to follow what the authors say. If I was relying on this book alone, I wouldn't have understood a thing.

They jump from one major topic to another on the same page without explaining the concepts in depth. There are very few examples to help you understand the concepts.

If you have the choice, I would recommend against this book and would recommend John Wiley's Introduction to Analog & Digital Communications, or a book with the same title by Michael Fitz.

Pretty great book if you take the time to read it

This is a math book. Don't expect a lot of pictures and real world examples. It covers the theory of communication systems in very comprehensive detail. If you don't let these details intimidate you, I can guarantee that you will learn a great deal.

Required reference book for the Sonoran Desert

This is not an "edible plants" field guide. It is an in depth review of Arizona, Sonora, and Baja desert plants useful as food and for other purposes. It is useful for building short term survival skills, for adding desert plants to ones diet, and as an ethnologic look at the indigenous population of the Sonoran Desert. It is an excellent book and one I am very happy to own.

Exhaustively researched, accurate, and useful

I divide wild food books into two types: those based on personal experience (or at least that pretend to be), and those based on research of ethnology. Hodgson's book falls into the latter category, and I think it is the best such book ever written, at least for any part of North America. Food Plants of the Sonoran Desert covers hundreds of species--all or virtually all that are known or strongly suspected to be used (or have been used previously) for food in this region. The diversity of plants covered is amazing. Some are discussed with very short entries because little is known about their use, while others receive lengthy treatment (mesquite, acorn, Stenocereus cactus) because they were staple foods and much has been recorded about their use. The book is done in an admirable scholarly fashion - sources are not only cited, but contradicting sources are sometimes quoted in juxtaposition and discussed.

To those who already have wild food field guides, you will be amazed at how many interesting and useful plants you'll find in this book that you might have never heard of. There are probably more species in here than in most field guides intended to cover the whole continent. (This should be a lesson for those unrealistic foragers who think they'll be able to find a field guide covering a whole continent or country (or even half of one) and thoroughly discuss every wild edible. It just can't fit in one book.) Of course, the Sonoran Desert is only a tiny fraction of the US, and this book also covers the Sonoran parts of Mexico, but many of the plants discussed range well outside this bioregion. I live 1,500 miles from the Sonoran desert and only get there about once every two years, but I still find it fascinating to read.

This is a great book for those interested in natural history, plants, ethnobotany, and the Sonoran Desert in particular. For survivalists, it provides sufficient information for the plants to be actually utilized, at least in many cases.

Although the photos are black and white, they are generally good. That said -- this is NOT AN ID GUIDE.

I wish every bioregion had a book like this. But then again, the ethnographic record in the Sonoran is far better than that in many other parts of the continent.

Excellent and Informative

I had been searching for an authoritative, exhaustingly-researched book specific to the ancient food plants of the Sonoran Desert and this is easily the definitive volume.

The book's catalog has three sections: Gymnosperms, Amniosperms: Monocots, and Angiosperms: Dicots, and there are 151 illustrations. Appendices include Plant Species and Parts Used (13 pages), Fruiting Periods of Selected Species Providing Edible Fruit (4 pages), Fruiting Periods of Selected Species Providing Edible Seeds (3 pages), Common Names (Non-English) (7 pages), and Literature Cited (18 pages). A good thorough Index is always helpful and this one includes Common Names in English and many other references for a total of 14 pages.

The amount of writing for each plant varies, likely corresponding with the frequency of its usage as a food source. For example, Sonchus (sow-thistle) gets less than half a page, while Yucca is more thoroughly explored on a full seven pages.

Ms. Hodgson's approach to the subject matter can be seen in her preface, which begins with a quote from Mary Austin: "When I'm out with the Indian women, gathering roots and materials for basket making, it's not that i expect to make baskets or drink their medicine, it's the things you sort of soak up from the earth while you're with them, it's the things that make women wise. I don't know if I can explain -- it's not as if they learned about the willows and the grasses in order to make baskets, but as if they learned to make baskets by knowing willows. I guess men used to learn that way once -- learned to make bows by knowing the junipers, the way the branches bend and spring back. But now they try to do all their learning in their heads." An excellent quote to start an ethnobotanical study of the plants eaten in the Sonoran Desert before modern agriculture sowed the land with species from other places and poured chemicals all over them and the soil to aid in the temporary appearance of artificial adaptation.

STUNNING BEAUTY

FABULOUS . . . the jewelry is amazing. Personal comments from Elizabeth like having her speak to you directly of her love for these treasures and those associated with them. Many photos of her a bonus. Have wanted this book since it was published and thrilled to finally own it. You will laugh and cry while reading about how many of the pieces came to her. Some unbelievably expensive, others valued beyond price. I seem to remember when the book came out about her saying this was the closest she would come to talking about her love affairs. A lasting tribute of a great lady with a most generous and loving heart. I wonder where many of these jewels now reside . . .

Grandma loved it

I didn't read this book. I bought it as a gift for my 87 year old grandmother. Someone had mentioned this book on another website and I came here to look it over.
I was impressed. The photographs I saw and the reviews were impressive. I knew she would love it. I bought it for her for Mother's Day.
She phoned me to tell me how much she LOVED it! I've never seen her go on and on about a book. I know if she didn't love the book she would have just said "Thank you sweetheart." But this was a different reaction. Her friends have seen the book on the table in the living room and tell her how much they love it. And how the photographs are superb.
I'm sure when I visit her I will spend hours looking at this book at her house. She told me that she spent hours and hours just sitting in the chair looking at all the great photos.

Very well written for the novice or someone interested in the art of bonsai. It is basic information and written to understand rather than confuse the reader! I am now comfortable enough to head to the garden center!

This is the guide to bonsai! I have read a great deal on bonsai, and everyone respects Mr. Harrington. It is my most fervent hope that he also publishes in paper form. I see it listed as published on 2/20, but have not been able to track it down yet. Can't wait!
