Our girl loves an acronym; her sweater-wearing dog, Maxi; selecting outfits for Funky Fashion Friday; and stating facts (FACT: “I am 100% inspired by Mom’s kimonos!”). Throughout, there are hip line illustrations that reinforce the text, like a map of Kiki’s neighborhood, with each of her friends’ houses labeled, as well as IM messages and doodles. The plot moves quickly and includes your basics: friendship drama, a missing dog, pajama parties. This offers more of a reading challenge than early readers (particularly given the hand-lettered type on ruled notebook paper), and it is a nice stepping stone to more advanced chapter books. A cute book that has its own place.

As a mom of three strong, self motivated, A+ readers and one reluctant reader, it varies what makes a "good" book. I purchased Lotus Lane #1: Kiki for my third grade reluctant reader. She has had some fairly disturbing books, such as "Dragon Awakes," forced upon her in school, and she is turned off by books with trauma in them. Kiki is lighter, but it still has it's educational merits. Also thankfully Kiki is not sassy! The format is written as a diary, which got my daughter interested in writing in her own diary. Lines are used to simulate the journal, but the unintended benefit is that the lines help my daughter with eye tracking. She doesn't need a straight edge when reading this book. Kiki's friends are organized, and they even have a chart of their clubs/activities, where they meet, and what each activity club is about. I was happy my daughter had extra practice with her chart reading skills. Regarding the texting: My daughter's friends are in 3rd and 4th grade. Many of them use texting lingo in their notes to each other. My daughter felt out of the loop and wanted to learn. The texting used in the book is explained in plain English with proper spelling. This provided a motivation for my daughter to read the book, as well as a chance for us to discuss proper spelling when writing for school vs texting. I do not recommend this book for an in-depth study in children's literature. However I do recommend this book for reluctant readers interested in books about fashion and friendship and for readers that need something "fun" and "safe" to read before bedtime to keep their thoughts positive.

Love for Lotus Lane!

I like this new series. Kiki is just the right mix of fluff and brains. She is a girl who likes to have sleepovers and eats cupcakes with fun flavors. She is a girl who sets goals and seeks to meet them. She is confronted with a situation (a new girl on her street who isn't nice) and although she isn't happy, she doesn't resort to name calling or plotting the ruin of the girl. She just seeks the friendship of her two best friends and continues on about her life and her goal of designing fashion. And, as luck would have it, she learns that the new girl isn't really that mean by the end of the book. Kiki and the new girl don't end up BFF's but they also don't end up enemies.

I think this book would be good for low level reading older grade girls such as 3-5 as well as the intended audience. I'm not sure a typical first grader could read this book on their own. The book is styled like a notebook/diary - the pages all have notebook lines on them. It is also sprinkled with texting talk like OTT (over the top) and BFF (best friends forever) as well as "fact" boxes. And there are also screen shots of the girls texting one another complete with texting lingo and emoticons. Non-texting girls may be a bit confused trying to read it, but then again, maybe there aren't that many nontexting children around anymore?! This book is a little fluffy, Kiki loves fashion, has sleepovers and make cupcakes with her BFF's but it's also got positive themes for girls. Kiki's mom is a professional stylist (showing a career in fashion), her friend Lulu is "always coming up with money-making ideas" and the girls' favorite movie is about a girl detective (who leaves a trail of glitter as she solves magical mysteries). It also has a bit of culture in it, Lulu is half French, Coco is Italian and the new girl is from Japan. Kiki learns about zen gardens and kimonos as she learns more about the new girl.

A teacher could use a bit of this book for a lesson in alliteration. The girls all live on Lotus Lane in Amber Acres. The main character is Kiki Keenan and her friends are Coco Corvino and Lulu Lyons. The new girl is Mika Maeda.

The illustrations in the book are similar to the Wimpy Kid series (black and white, stick figures with round heads) and distributed throughout the book in a similar way to Wimpy Kid, but these illustrations contain more detailed drawings than the Wimpy Kid series. Overall, this is a fun new series!

Not what I want my daughter reading

Not easy to read, subject matter is so superficial that I felt myself and my daughter getting dumber as we read it. Too much "texting" in a book for little girls. We couldn't finish it...my 8 year old hated it.

Not for the faint of heart

Not for the faint of heart. Brutal yet beautiful. Morbid imagery, but not disgusting or distasteful. Joel-Peter Witkin does use real deceased human subjects in his photo surreal scenes, but it's not typically gory or focused on gore, blood and guts. It's more in the mind set of seeing the beauty in the decay. Life is not only about living, death is a part of life and life is a part of death, all of which can be seen as beautiful since you cannot have one without the other. It's complicated imagery that makes you think deeply, and sometimes cringe.

I would call it modern fine art / modern photography, but the imagery is timeless. He does do some post work in Photoshop or some other photo editing application to finalize many of his masterpieces.

JOEL-PETER WITKIN: VANITAS was published last year in the Czech Republic. Conceived as a way to allow Witkin to comment on the creative nidus of his own creations this monograph presents a collection of Witkin's latest photographs, his retablos, created over the last three years. The monograph, in English and in Czech, with a text by the art historian Otto M. Urban summarizes the development of Witkin's life and work.

Witkin is a Brooklyn born photographers who stylized black and white portraits focus on still life and portraiture and stirs up controversy whenever they are shown. Witkin's black-and-white portraits and still-lifes of hermaphrodites, body parts, severed heads, and mutilations and religious themes are the subjects and objects Witkin presents to us. For Witkin, the goal is simple: "I wanted my photographs to be as powerful as the last thing a person sees or remembers before death." Morbid to some maybe, but he photographs his subjects beautifully creating an atmosphere of decadence. His influences come from his appreciation of Goya, Odilon Redon Hieronymus Bosch, and Giotto. This book is a survey of his work from the 1970s to present day and presents a collection of Witkin's latest photographs, his retablos, created over the last three years.

The American photographer Joel-Peter Witkin, born 1939 in Brooklyn and now living in Albuquerque, NM, has been one of the most outstanding representatives in the world of photography since the end of the 1970s. His stylized black and white images are included in all major photography collections around the world. Witkin focuses mainly on still life and portraiture. His work presents a unique view of the contemporary world and he often works populated with bizarre creatures and themes have been described as `shock fodder' to the religious right due to references to religious themes (the crucifixion, saints, etc.) as well as to classical painting (Francisco Goya, Odilon Redon, Joan Miró, Hieronymus Bosch, etc. Also thanks to the work of Joel-Peter Witkin the concept of decadence and the decadent has recently emerged more and more in relation to contemporary art. The book represents a cross section of the artist's work since the 1970s to the present. In addition to photographs, lesser known drawings and paintings are also included in the book.

In Witkin's words, placed throughout the book, `My art is the way I perceive and define life. It s sacred work, since what I make are my prayers. I am not looking for sensations, even though I work with very striking elements. I merely want to express myself. Even though the elements may vary, the results should still aim to celebrate life and the positive side of it. They should educate us and lead us to greater love and mercy I only take photographs of what I believe in: if I show death, that is because even in that condition I recognize this power of reality that no imagined work can reproduce. I believe that Christ was a man who transcended this bodily form and became God: or to put it in terms of my personal belief - God placed on the man called Jesus the mask of Christ!'

This volume, perhaps more than any of his other monographs, reveals the artist behind the strange creations that have flowed from his creative mind throughout his career. Great book for my collection

Joel-Peter Witkin is a master at "out-of-the-box" thinking with a great sense of humor. Some of the art is not for the "faint of heart" but ALL of his art is inspiring and worth exploration. His art is beautifully executed as well, as is this book which is well done and the images well reproduced. I am delighted to add it to my collection.

Unforgettable is the final book in Melody Grace’s Beachwood Bay series and is the great send-off for these most loved books. This book is about figuring out what is important and making the changes to find happiness in all the facets of one’s life.
We were introduced to Noelle Olsen and Ash Callahan in an amazing fashion in Unmasked. There we got to see a side to both that the world didn’t necessarily get to see. Or hear them tell each other, secrets that stayed locked away in their heads and hearts. Unmasked was the fairy dust and Unforgettable is its aftermath, steeped in cold, hard reality.
I loved Unforgettable because it gathered all the magic in Unmasked and started making Noelle & Ash’s wishes come true, but not necessarily the way they might have hoped. It’s here that we see what these two are made of and what they do when life throws them lemons — in Noelle’s case, she bakes a lemon pound cake or 20.
Beachwood Bay has not only been about romance, but also families, friends and community. In Unforgettable, they are an all of the above proposition. We get to see all of these things in action during the course of the story and you realize just how important they are to not only the story, but also the series.
Noelle becomes even more of favorite character in Unforgettable. She has a spirit and a sense of wonder that is contagious. She made me smile and tear up a little bit.
Ash was every bit of an enigma. As the oldest in his family, his obligations were massive and he never felt like he could let up – even after the money was made. I loved him though – he was a good guy, but needed to reprioritize as much as the next guy or girl. But his motivation came from a place of real love and that was enough for me.
Unforgettable was a fabulous book and while I am sad the Beachwood Bay series is ending, I love that Melody Grace was true to her characters in so many ways. If you haven’t read this series, you should absolutely #OCTB each book and enjoy!!!

We all have the books that leave us yearning and with a heart so full of love. Unforgettable; the final Beachwood Bay series novel left me in awe and full of all sorts of emotions. I remember first reading Unbroken (Beachwood Bay #1) way back in 2013, which feels like forever ago I might add and thinking this is a book I will treasure forever and since then every single book in the series has held my heart. Unforgettable is Ash and Noelle’s story, told in a dual perspective full-length novel that incorporates everything I love about Melody Grace’s writing and the passion of romance her scripture of voice brings forward.

It all begins with a night of forgetting the world and finding passion in a strangers arms with lust and sensual depths unbeknown that will lead to recoil and rumblings of heart. A night that was meant to be once off leads to more when tragedy burrows it’s hole and questions of life play hard on Noelle leading her to race to a different pace and to uphold grandmothers B&B in Beachwood Bay. Unexpectedly a chance encounter colliding worlds with Ash again wasn’t in the plan; as the corporate world swallows Ash whole and the night with Noelle plays on his mind the two meeting in Beachwood Bay will either end in disaster or will hold a footprint etched in their hearts of the one night that changed everything.

As I close the chapter on the Beachwood Bay series that Melody Grace has put so much heart, blood, tears and emotion into; it isn’t without the epilogue that was basically a tear-fest of me crying. I loved everything about the concluding chapter of the Beachwood Bay series with heart that hits a chord and being able to relate to, to the sensual passion of a connection and bond of all these characters I will forever remember. For the fans of the Beachwood Bay series and Melody Grace Unforgettable doesn’t disappoint and will leave you with all the feelings.

WOW, JUST WOW !!

This book, was just W O W, Melody Grace knows how to bring a book to life, give characters the needed emotions that make them feel so very real. I absolutely adored this book, being the end of the series , Melody knocked this out the park.... I want to make sure some know before reading, if you haven't read the Callahan part of the series, then you should before you read this one.
Since Uninhibited, we have got to know the Callahan family, and it's been so fun getting to see each one find the one they love, some fighting it every step of the way. So when it's Ash turn, he tries to run, but you can't run forever. Ash, is so complex to understand and, that's why I love how Melody Grace let us get to know him a little in some of the books, I love the advise in Unwritten, that he give to Blake, but we got a peek at the vulnerability in Ash. The man Ash is., and the man that is to scared to put his heart out there again..
Then we meet Noelle Olsen, a free spirit, but she is smart and isn't afraid to take a chance. I really loved her character, being strong, but also she isn't afraid of how she feels or what she wants. Although Ash and Noelle would seem an unlikely couple, but as you read you can see how prefect they would be.
As I read the last in t he series, I let some wonderful memories of the books of this series, I let tears flow just remembering the first book, when Emerson meets Juliet, and sparks fly off that page!!! I am in AWE of the talented way Melody gave so much life into each character, and the creative way of draw us readers into an AWESOME story. I have loved and enjoyed this series from book one Untouched, and each one just kept getting better..
