In June of 1964, three young, white blues fans set out from New York City in a Volkswagen, heading for the Mississippi Delta in search of a musical legend. So begins Preachin' the Blues, the biography of American blues signer and guitarist Eddie James "Son" House, Jr. (1902 - 1988). House pioneered an innovative style, incorporating strong repetitive rhythms with elements of southern gospel and spiritual vocals. A seminal figure in the history of the Delta blues, he was an important, direct influence on such figures as Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson.
The landscape of Son House's life and the vicissitudes he endured make for an absorbing narrative, threaded through with a tension between House's religious beliefs and his spells of commitment to a lifestyle that implicitly rejected it. Drinking, womanizing, and singing the blues caused this tension that is palpable in his music, and becomes explicit in one of his finest performances, "Preachin' the Blues." Large parts of House's life are obscure, not least because his own accounts of them were inconsistent. Author Daniel Beaumont offers a chronology/topography of House's youth, taking into account evidence that conflicts sharply with the well-worn fable, and he illuminates the obscurity of House's two decades in Rochester, NY between his departure from Mississippi in the 1940s and his "rediscovery" by members of the Folk Revival Movement in 1964. Beaumont gives a detailed and perceptive account of House's primary musical legacy: his recordings for Paramount in 1930 and for the Library of Congress in 1941-42. In the course of his research Beaumont has unearthed not only connections among the many scattered facts and fictions but new information about a rumoured murder in Mississippi, and a charge of manslaughter on Long Island - incidents which bring tragic light upon House's lifelong struggles and self-imposed disappearance, and give trenchant meaning to the moving music of this early blues legend.

About the Author

Daniel Beaumont teaches courses on Arabic language and literature and the blues at the University of Rochester. He is the author of Slave of Desire: Sex, Love and Death in The 1001 Nights (Associated University Presses 2002). He produced and directed "So Much Truth" a documentary about bluesman Joe Beard. He also worked as chief observer on a rain making project in Libya and he has been on the historic "King Biscuit Time" blues radio show.

Daniel Beaumont's fine biography of Son House

I finished reading the Son House biography, "Preachin' the Blues: The Life and Times of Son House" by Daniel Beaumont and while I intend to do a lengthier review, I thought it would serve to state my brief impressions. He makes use of much of the existing published material as well as some unpublished material such as stuff he has derived from the late Stephen Calt's research. Thankfully the book is evenly written and lacks the nasty potshots that Calt was capable of taking against others. For example, if Calt had done a House biography, one would be hard-pressed to imagine Calt praising Dick Waterman's work with Son as Son's manager.

The only negatives include the fact that photo reproduction of some images could have been better and no discography of Son's recordings including CD releases. This book actually has footnotes which is quite helpful compared to the modern tendency of having endnotes at the end of a text. Another wonderful addition to the blues literature.

If only he stayed sober.

Recently, the State of Mississippi installed an extensive set of historic markers throughout the State. It is called the Mississippi Blues Trail. By traveling around the State, and with a good guide book, one can get a sense of the importance of Mississippi in the development of Blues and Rock & Roll in the early to mid twentieth century. The area north of Clarksdale to Memphis was Son House's stomping grounds. That area, roughly called Robinsonville-Tunica Resorts, is an area of big contrasts. It has all the hallmarks of upper crust Mississippi. (Big new casinos. Big levee projects, Big Plantation/Farms and agriculture) It also has residual poverty and abandoned and little used hamlets. (Hernando, Banks, Lyon, Lula, Marks, Ashland, and Dundee). Preachin the Blues mentions all these hamlets and their significance to the Blues. With the exception of Lula, not even the State of Mississippi is up to speed with this. This is a major strength of this book, and it should be read before anyone travels or vacations on the Mississippi Blues Trail. It would add a lot to the experience.
By the time of the Blues revival in the early 1960s, Son House was the last man standing of the early Delta foundation players. Charley Patton and Robert Johnson were dead. Son House had been living in Rochester, NY for 20 years, and indulging in alcoholism. He could have been a giant. He could have been a contenda. The drinking ruined all of this. Think of Louis Armstrong to Jazz, Duke Ellington to big band Jazz, and BB King to modern day Blues. That could have been Son House to the early Delta Blues. Preachin the Blues tends to give Son House a pass on this. And the book points out that Howlin Wolf doesn't give Son House a pass on this. And neither does the verdict of history. In my opinion, that's the only shortcoming of this book. I would have deducted a 1/4 star, but the software won't allow it.
It's a great book. But it's really tragic that Son House wasn't able to offer more.

Justice for Eddie!

One of the finest books on the subject of blues I have read. Makes a great companion to Calt's book on Skip James, though Beaumont's tone is decidedly less caustic and defamatory. The only real villain in Beaumont's book seems to be Alan Lomax, who is cast as an opportunistic sort, but mostly, the book is heavy on facts and light on conjecture and gossip. Given what I knew about House before from various accounts (such as Segrest and Hoffman's Howlin' Wolf biography, Moanin' At Midnight), I was surprised and delighted to find that the man was occasionally humble and frequently benevolent, in direct contrast to some of his contemporaries (again, Skip James, who seemed like a pretty hard guy to like), and not merely a drunken has-been, as he has often been lamentably painted. An indispensable book on a fascinating subject. Highest recommendation.

Awesome wedding flower ideas.

I found this book very inspiring. The pictures are very well done. My granddaughter and I found so many fantastic ideas for wedding bouquets and the other wedding flowers. While the book doesn't go into step-by-step detail on how to create the bouquets, it does give good, general instructions on how to create the bouquets for someone who is familiar with the process of creating hand-held bouquets. The book gives several money-saving tips for making the bouquets by substituting more expensive flowers with less expensive flowers when making the bouquets. If nothing else, the book is a fantastic resource for floral designs for wedding flowers.

I bought several "how to" books in order to create flowers for my daughter's wedding. This book is clear and easy to understand. Of the several books I bought this one was used most often. Even though I designed all her flowers well ahead of time from silk flowers, we were able to build off the designs in this book. If you only buy one book - it should be this one!

My number 1 'go to' book for the year ahead, astrologically. LOVE THIS BOOK!!

Mr. Polansky's yearly book is one that I have sought out and bought every single year for the last 10 years. It's been spot on in my life, and I find it a really valuable tool for looking forward, and seeing what's coming on the horizon. The last few years I've even purchased it by pre-ordering it before it's even available……it's THAT good. As soon as I get it, I sit down and read the year ahead section, the general overview, which is really helpful….and then I go through the month by month sections for both my sun sign and my rising sign. I absolutely love this book and I highly recommend it.

Misleading, and a waste of time and money

Save your money. First off, you need to know your Rising Sign (Ascendant) for this book to be of any use at all. If you are, say, born with Sun in Leo, and you read that section for its prognostications, but your Rising Sign is other than Leo, you won't gain any benefit. What the author has done is simply placed your Sun sign -- in this case Leo -- on the Ascendant, and is interpreting the planets in the other houses accordingly. But if you have, say, Pisces rising, then all of the placements and prognostications for Leo are wrong. You need to read the Pisces Sun sign section to get an accurate placement of the planets. That said, astrology is much more complex than what this book is giving you. I have studied it for many, many years -- you need an accurate birth chart (go to Astrodienst website and you can calculate and print it for free), you need the up-to-date progressions for that birth chart (one day after birth = one year of life, etc.), and then you need to superimpose the transiting (as they now exist in the sky) planets on top of that to get any kind of reasonable assessment of what the year ahead will hold.

The Best Way to Understand Cross-National Comparisons

The Logic of Comparative Social Inquiry, altho two decades old, stands out as fresh and relevant as it has always been for people -- policy makers, involved citizens, as well as researchers, who want to do, make, or understand cross-national comparisons. Although Note: their approach is by no means limited to the comparison of different countries. Comparisons across the 50 U.S. states also benefit from much of what the authors present (not so much about linguistic/foreign language equivalence, which is a different issue with which they deal).
The easiest way to describe the value of Przeworski and Teune's insights is to see how cross-national country studies can be used to emulate the experimenter's scientific approach to finding pattterns. The experimenter can "hold other variables constant" through statistical means or the selection of people or cases to study. When looking at countries (or U.S. states) a selection of "cases" can be fashioned that emulates in different kinds of experimental controls. In particular the authors describe a pair of strategies: The Most Different Nation and the Most Similar Nation strategies.
In the Most Different model the analyst selects cases (countries) which are known to be very different from one another: e.g., Korea, Australia, Germany, Ecuador, South Africa.... This model is best for the generation of hypotheses because one assumes that the variable of interest will vary widely across the different countries. On the other hand the Most Similar model is best for hypothesis testing, and it is here that the "hold constant" idea is seen: Sweden, Norway, Denmark are similar enough on many key variables, so that those variables are in a sense "held constant". Or Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK -- for linguistic purposes. etc.
These models become even more valuable with the 50 U.S. states because there are many more opportunities to use demographic, economic, and historical variables in the selection of Most Different or Most Similar cases.
The book is well worth the investment of money and time for any who want to use the Nations of the world of the States of U.S. to explore or test questions and hypotheses about processes and linkages that are directly amenable to usual scientific analysis.

Useful intro to comparative politics research

There are a lot of books about social science research. This one still has value, even after 40 years. I like that it has multiple scholars contributing their perspectives. This book does a good job laying out various strategies for research design. It isn't filled with a bunch of dumbed-down examples about abstract logic, but rather explains what types of comparisons are useful for testing alternative theories.

Musical improvisation has often been compared to 'speaking a musical language.' While past research has focussed on comparisons of music and language perception, few have dealt with this comparison in the performance domain. In this book, learning to improvise is compared with language acquisition, and improvised performance is compared with spontaneous speech from both theoretical and neurobiological perspectives.

About the Author

Aaron Berkowitz received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University, his Ph.D. in music from Harvard University, and his Bachelors degrees in Music (B.A.) and Biology (B.S.) from George Washington University. He has published his research in the journals NeuroImage and Twentieth Century Music, has been an invited speaker at several major U.S. universities and conferences, and served as a guest professor in music and psychology at Tufts University. As a pianist and fortepianist he has performed throughout Europe and the U.S., and as a composer his compositions have been performed in Europe and the U.S., including Carnegie Hall.

Recommendation for everyone interested in this exciting way of musical practice

Aaron L. Berkowitz : The Improvising Mind - Cognition and Creativity in the Musical Moment, Oxford University Press 2010

The subject of musical improvisation - explored through an interdisciplinary approach. The author explains, in an understandible way for the non-professional interested reader, and nevertheless in a sufficently profound way for the expert, the different aspects of improvisation.

On the one hand, the reader gets interesting historical and pedagogical insights, and he also will learn important aspects of the historical development of the musical knowledge base that is necessary for the practice of improvisation. On the other hand he will get important scientific insights in the state of the art of neurobiological studies about brain activities while improvising.

But these are not the only aspects on improvisation, treated in this 200 p. book. Learners'and teachers' perspectives as well as performers'and audiences'perspectives are treated in a crosscultural way. Improvisation is not a domain of Jazz music, as some readers may think. It exists in classical music likewise, and in the music of all other cultures.

The comparison of the learning process of improvising music and speaking a second language is another aspect that is treated in a multidisciplinary way.

I enjoyed very much reading this book and I recommend it to everyone interested in this exciting way of musical performance.
