Foe, by J. M. Coetzee

J.M. Coetzee's latest novel, The Schooldays of Jesus, will soon be available from Viking

With the same electrical intensity of language and insight that he brought to Waiting for the Barbarians, J.M. Coetzee reinvents the story of Robinson Crusoe—and in so doing, directs our attention to the seduction and tyranny of storytelling itself

In 1720 the eminent man of letters Daniel Foe is approached by Susan Barton, lately a castaway on a desert island. She wants him to tell her story, and that of the enigmatic man who has become her rescuer, companion, master and sometimes lover: Cruso. Cruso is dead, and his manservant, Friday, is incapable of speech. As she tries to relate the truth about him, the ambitious Barton cannot help turning Cruso into her invention. For as narrated by Foe—as by Coetzee himself—the stories we thought we knew acquire depths that are at once treacherous, elegant, and unexpectedly moving.

From Publishers Weekly
This slim novel by the author of Waiting for the Barbarians is both a variant of Robinson Crusoe and a complex parable of art and life. PW noted that the characters' relationships are "an allegory of the evil social order that poisons the author's native South Africa."

From Library Journal
Cast adrift by a mutinous crew, Susan Barton washes ashore on an isle of classic fiction. For the next year, Robinson Cruso sculpts the land while Friday mutely watches Susan intrude upon their loneliness. Life is mere pattern for the two unquestioning castaways, but Susan is not of their story and she pushes Cruso for rationales that don't exist in a world of imagination. Finally rescued and returned to London, Susan leads Friday to Daniel Foe, the author who will write their tale. Foe, however, sees a different story and seeks "to tell the truth in all its substance." Discovering such truth is Coetzee's aim in Foe, an intriguing novel strikingly different from his earlier works. Here he scrutinizes the gulf between a story and its telling, giving us a thought-provoking text wonderfully rich in meaning and design. Paul E. Hutchison, English Dept., Pennsylvania State Univ., University Park

Review
"A small miracle of a book...of marvelous intricacy and overwhelming power." —The Washington Post Book World

"Foe is a finely honed testament to its author's intelligence, imagination, and skill.... The writing is lucid and precise, the landscape depicted mythic yet specific." —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

Imaginative and provocative, but impenetrably enigmatic
By R. M. Peterson
This novel (novella?) is 157 pages. For the first 111 pages I was enthralled, especially as I had read Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe" only two months before. FOE is J.M. Coetzee's updated twist of "Robinson Crusoe". ("Foe" was Daniel Defoe's surname at birth; he later fancified it.)

FOE is the account of an Englishwoman, Susan Barton, about what happened on the South Atlantic island where Cruso (spelled by her without an "e") and Friday were marooned and how Daniel Foe came to write their story. Years after Cruso and Friday, Susan had been shipwrecked on that same island and she spent a year there with the two men before all three were "rescued" (Cruso and Friday were taken off the island much against their wishes) by a passing English ship. Cruso died before the ship reached England and Susan resolved to tell and publish their collective story in order to make money. So she enters into an arrangement with the experienced writer Daniel Foe.

The problem is that Susan's story about what happened is rather dull. Cruso had no tools, no weaponry, no seeds, nor any writing implements, and he had not transformed the isolated isle into an English Garden of Paradise. He was not imbued with the Protestant work ethic; in truth, he was bland, rude, and somewhat unhinged. Friday was equally asocial; he pursued his own eccentric rituals and what made him even more inscrutable was the fact that his tongue had been cut out by slavers (or, Susan worries, perhaps by Cruso) so that he had no way to express himself vocally. Friday was, in modern parlance, the embodiment of "the Other". Nor had anything especially dramatic ever occurred on the island: no footprints in the sand or attacks by cannibals, for instance.

Though the entire novel is slippery, rendering absolute certitude about anything virtually impossible, I can say with some confidence that Foe found Susan's story unmarketable. Given the actual novel "Robinson Crusoe", it is reasonably safe to conclude that in Coetzee's vision, Foe took many liberties and invented many things and, significantly, he wrote Susan out of the story.

Now we enter the realm where Coetzee's commentary shoulders aside his story. First, of course, there is the matter of ignoring women in our traditional stories of the civilizing of the globe. Friday, deprived of tongue and speech, seemingly stands for some sort of comment (but what, precisely?) on imperialism and colonialism. In addition, there would seem to be comments (but what, precisely?) on language and semiotics, on freedom and slavery, on story-telling and creativity, and on truth.

The novel tantalizingly presents itself as an allegory about something(s), but it ends up being impenetrably enigmatic. That is largely because in its last 45 pages the story spirals out of control. I am left with so little idea of what Coetzee might have been driving at that I really don't care, and I rather suspect that he doesn't really know either. It is almost as if, after writing the first 111 pages, Coetzee dropped some acid before dashing off the concluding 45 pages. Whatever the reason, the last 45 pages strike me much as the dreams of a mystic lunatic and I am left feeling somewhat cheated and resentful.

I understand that FOE is thought by many to be the "archetypal postmodern" novel. I guess I am too old-fashioned.

Another Crusoe
By Roger Brunyate
"I am not a story, Mr. Foe. I may impress you as a story because I began my account of myself without preamble, slipping overboard into the waves and striking out for the shore. But [...] there was a life before the water [...] which makes up a story I do not choose to tell. [...] I am a free woman who asserts her freedom by telling her story according to her own desire."

The woman is Susan Barton, speaking to the writer Daniel Defoe (he added the "de" to his family name later). Rescued after being cast away on the Caribbean island, she has sought out the author to write her story and make her fortune. Her island adventure, which she tells in the first part, is a rather different version of the story that we know from ROBINSON CRUSOE. But the larger part of the book consists of a dialogue between Susan and Foe, partly in letters, partly in person, examining the themes referred to here: the nature of the writing process, the way our lives are shaped by the stories we choose to tell about them, and above all the meaning of freedom, especially as a woman or a member of a subjugated race.

Cruso (as the name is spelled here) was already on the island when Susan got there. Instead of the numerous items that Defoe will allow him to salvage from the wreck, Susan's Cruso came ashore with nothing but a knife and lives much more simply. So far from being rescued from cannibals, Friday was washed ashore with him, but he is a mute whose tongue has been cut out in childhood. At sixty, Cruso has no wish to leave the island, and when a ship does arrive to carry them away, he dies on the voyage, leaving Susan as the only witness, other than Friday who cannot speak.

Susan continues to write to Foe, even after he has been forced to flee his creditors. She takes possession of his empty house, sitting at the author's desk, writing letters that may never be delivered. But as she essentially shapes her own narrative, Defoe is simultaneously shaping hers, eventually writing her out of her own tale -- but also adding new elements as though to make a separate novel out of her, as he would later do with MOLL FLANDERS. Hence Susan's forcible objections in the quotation with which I started. Indeed, Defoe's inventions come to take surreal form, as Susan is visited by a long-lost daughter conjured from the writer's imagination in response to her grief, but bearing no resemblance to her real child. Coetzee's interest in recursive narratives has continued to the present day, as in his recent SUMMERTIME, but this 1986 novel is the most intellectually abstract of his that I have read, though fascinating in the manner of an Escher drawing.

But there are serious points behind the mind-games. Most obviously, the feminist complaint that although Susan can serve as Foe's muse, she has no control over the artistic progeny. Her castaway story will be reshaped with the relatively passive Crusoe as hero, whereas Defoe's heroines would all be fallen women. Even more interesting, for a South African author writing under Apartheid, is the silencing of Friday. Unable to speak for himself, unable even to write, Friday's existence depends entirely on those who write his story for him, and even Susan's willingness to accord him the freedom she claims for herself is valueless without the ability to give him the narrative to support it.

Other Inconvenient Truths Beyond Global Warming, by Alan F Rozich

Global warming rightfully earned the title of “An Inconvenient Truth”. However, there are a number of other inconvenient truths that comprise a Super Nexus. The super nexus consists of societal needs for economic and environmental sustainability, economic and population expansion, and simultaneous resources needs. These trends will begin to act collectively in a negatively synergistic manner to the detriment of human civilization if left unchecked. One consequence is skyrocketing resource costs which threaten the very fabric of societal functionality. So what does this all mean? What is the answer? It is that resolving the Super Nexus needs to be the focus and not CO2. Resource security using renewables, not CO2 should be the focus. Resource security is pivotal for societal functionality. If society gets most of its resources from renewables, then CO2 emissions will drop. Transitioning to a renewable economy also means that many of our resources which heretofore are emitted into the environment as waste are now recovered which will attenuate emissions and pollution of the environment.

HUGELY Valuable Book with Color Photographs, Embedded Yellow Highlights
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
This is one of the most useful, most intelligent, best presented and most timely books I have ever held in my hands. I am astonished by the affordable price in relation to both the substance and the cosmetics of the book. This is a focused holistic book that is a joy to read -- easy to read -- and it offers the single best text I have found for both graduate and undergraduate reading, and book clubs as well as government employees struggling to understand the lies and mis-representations of those seeking to avoid or undermine regulatory oversight.

The print size and use of white space is complemented by something I have never seen in a mass market paperback, full color photographs, full color diagrams, and the selective use of yellow highlighting embedded across the book.

This is a book steeped in integral consciousness, with a clear understanding and articulation of the fact that global warming is a symptom, not a root cause, and that global warming is but one of multiple inconvenient truth, all of which much be understood as a whole.

This is a very up-to-date book, with references at the end of each chapter coming up to 2013. The book frames problems and provides executable actions within each chapter. It also provides -- and I am a technical idiot -- the science and the technology is explanations with diagrams that I can understand. This is a book on the art and science of reconciling humanity and the Earth that anyone can appreciate. It is a multidisciplinary book replete with ethics at every point.

The tri-fecta is energy, water, and waste emissions from a combination of agriculture and economy.

QUOTE (71): "The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane."

I am stunned to find that Walmart shines in this book, working rapidly toward 100% renewable energy for its stores, and having achieved a 70% reduction of waste from its various processes. I also recollect reading elsewhere that Walmart pioneered the use of batteries in its long-haul trucks so the drivers would not idle their fossil fuel engines while sleeping or resting in their trucks, and this saved Walmart tens of millions in fuel costs while also stopping that portion of its emissions.

The biological and chemical chapters that would normally leave me with eyes glazed over are superb, crystal-clear, ably illustrated (in color, I love it), and segue into ten environmental success stories followed by fourteen renewable options for humanity.

Chapter 10, focused on the nexus of agriculture, water, and energy is fascinating and could be pulled from the book as a partial reading for students at any level from advanced high school to graduate school.

QUOTE (497): "The continued functionality of human society is at a pivotal point."

I certainly agree with that. The ten high level threats to humanity identified in A More Secure World: Our Shared Responsibility--Report of the Secretary-General's High-level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change include, in this order, 01 Poverty, 02 Infectious Disease, 03 Environmental Degradation, 04 Inter-State Conflict, 05 Civil War, 06 Genocide, 07 Other Atrocities, 08 Proliferation, 09 Terrorism, and 10 Transnational Crime. While this book focused on threat #3, it is actually relevant to ALL of the threats, for contrived scarcity along with institutionalized corruption are the root of most of our ills.

The book ends with a Glossary-Thesaurus of 115 terms of art and science, each explained in a paragraph. The index is not complete. Tesla, for example, appears in the book but not in the index.

As it happens I have spent a lot of time in this arena, and am a fan of Dr. Herman Daly, father of ecological economics, and many others. My lists of lists of my Amazon reviews are easily found by searching for them as listed below:

I find only two gaps in this book. First, I find the author to be overly enamored of super-grid concepts for addressing energy needs. While he does mention micro-grids, I would have preferred to see more emphasis on the importance of decentralized resilience. Second, despite being up to date as of 2013, the book does not offer insights into the wealth of new energy options such as Sepp Hasslberger has been curating for us all on physics, economy, new energy, and more.

I strongly recommend this book. As the author himself notes, no amount of public policy or private investment will suffice to overcome ignorant citizens. Informed engaged citizens are the heart of the matter. This book is a major contribution to the latter end.

Best wishes to all,
Robert David STEELE Vivas

An important and eye-opening book that could use some editing
By Dennis Littrell
The most important thing about this book is the thorough and unmistakable way that Dr. Rozich documents and explains why global warming is just the most obvious "inconvenient truth" that we humans are facing. Global warming is in a sense just a symptom of other inconvenient truths such as depleting ancient aquifers, polluted rivers and lakes, soil erosion, threatened fertilizer supplies and mushrooming landfills, not to mention too many people on the planet. Cleaning up pollution and pumping water from deeper wells requires the use of more energy which results in burning more fossil fuels which results in climate change.

The terrible thing about these other inconvenient truths is that some of them are likely to happen sooner rather than later. The looming water shortages in many places in the world are more likely to cause catastrophic human suffering before global warming becomes hellish. The pollution in our water supplies in the form of "endocrine disruptor compounds" from the pharmaceutical industry as Rozich documents can disrupt the hormonal systems in humans and other animals. Those effects could be devastating long before the rise in global temperatures becomes intolerable.

Food shortages due to the diminishing reserves of phosphate rocks and soil erosion are on the horizon and are actually happening in many places in the world already.

Rozich explains what is happening worldwide in these areas of deep concern. He explains the science and documents the findings. He makes the jargon and the specialized vocabularies intelligible.

All and all this is an outstanding piece of work, a textbook on what humans are doing to the planet and what can and cannot be done about it. However there are two problems one minor and just annoying and the other so serious that it will cost Rozich many readers and that's a shame because this is he kind of book that all of humanity needs to read and understand (in particular, heads of state and other politicians.)

One, there are far too many typos in the text mostly in the form of words left out of sentences. Often these words are prepositions that are easy to overlook but when missing require the reader to reread the sentence to figure out what is meant. Additionally some words are misused, causing some confusion. I counted something like a dozen before I gave up; there might be a couple of hundred in the book.

Two, there is far too much needless repetition. Repetition for emphasis or to shine light from another direction on the subject can be valuable; but most of the repetition in this book is the sort that comes about because the author is using material written at different times and hasn't done the admittedly painstaking task of cutting out what he has already said.

I think that all writers can appreciate this quote from Blaise Pascal (also attributed to Mark Twain and others): "I have made this...longer...only because I have not had the time to make it shorter. "

Dr. Rozich would be wise to take the time and hire a professional text editor who could easily reduce the size of this important book by a third thus making it more focused, readable and accessible to more people and save readers a lot of time.

A great read
By Jack
Alan Rozich goes beyond the narrow theme of global warming when analyzing the greater threat facing human civilization. He raises the specter of the Three Headed Hydra, anticipating the train wreck that will occur at the nexus of 1) a rapid increase in human population pursuing a betterment of their standard of living, that requires 2) a major depletion of finite resources that precludes 3) achieving a global goal of economic and environmental stability.
To quote Mr. Rozich, who quotes Billy Kwan from the film “The Year of Living Dangerously” that relies on the original quote from Leo Tolstoy, “What then must we do?” And the author proceeds to tell us what must be done. But, refreshingly, only after laying the foundation of science for the reader that allows one to develop an informed opinion of the book’s solutions that Mr. Rozich posits will slay the Three Headed Hydra.

Anne Frank: Beyond the Diary - A Photographic Remembrance, by Ruud Van der Rol, Rian Verhoeven

Anne Frank lived a life filled with the enthusiasms and hopes shared by many young women coming into adulthood.  But the times Anne lived in and wrote of in her diary made her simple life extraordinary.  In over one hundred photographs, many which have never been published, this poignant memoir brings to life the harrowing story of one young Jewish woman's struggle to survive during a period of history which must never be forgotten.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-Anyone who has been touched by Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl will be moved by this account that opens on the day Anne received the journal for her 13th birthday. The color photo of the diary set opposite the text lends immediacy and a sense of reality to the commentary. The feelings are reinforced throughout by the authors' prodigious research and the accumulation of details through the photographs. Some of the pictures included have never been published before, and their lengthy captions describe not only who is in the photos, but also the circumstances under which they were taken. Framed pages expand on the political and economical situations of the time. The well-written main narrative, which uses aptly chosen quotations from the diary, takes readers from Anne's normal, happy childhood through the years in the Secret Annex to the betrayal and Anne's death from typhus in Bergen-Belsen just months before her 16th birthday and only weeks before the liberation of the camp. For readers the loss is double. One feels the personal loss of a bright, fun-loving, and talented individual who might have made a difference in the world and also remembers that many Anne Franks died during that nightmarish period.

From Booklist
Gr. 5-12. Like the classic diary, this photobiography translated from the Dutch captures the ordinariness of Anne Frank's life. The particulars personalize the sorrow of the six million gone. The individual photos of Anne's early life are generally unexceptional, mostly snapshots, a bit blurry at times, like any family album; that's why they bear witness to the way genocide destroyed people like you and me. At the same time, the book puts Anne Frank's story in a historical context. The handsome design, with well-captioned photographs and short essays in spacious type, will hold browsers as well as those who want to read the book through. Excerpts from Anne's diaries are combined with an account of the two years in the Secret Annex (from the time of going into hiding until the betrayal, arrest, and deportation) and also with a general history and photographs of the rise of Nazism and the fate of the Jews. Several large, clear maps also tell the story, including where Anne Frank lived (from Germany to Holland to the Secret Annex to Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen). A final section talks about the return of Anne's father after the war, the setting up of the Anne Frank House as a museum in 1960, and the diary's authenticity. There are photos of those who risked their lives to hide the Franks, including Miep Gies, who found the diary after Anne was taken away.

Everything is quiet, low-key: There's no milking of the legend. It's hard to know which pages are more heartbreaking: the facsimile of the last diary entry; the picture of the marks on the wall recording the growth of Anne and her sister in their hiding place; the mass scenes of the transports and concentration camps. All libraries will want this: for classroom units studying the Holocaust, for kids reading the diary, for everyone who remembers it. In an interview in Book Links (Sept_. 1993), coauthor Verhoeven, a historian at the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, emphasizes the connection between what happened to Anne Frank and racism today. Anne Frank: An inner furnace in our souls
By A Customer
Some quirky calculus seems to rule the story of Anne Frank and her diary. The further time recedes from the pivotal events of the diary's origins, the more people seem interested in Anne as a person, Anne as a Holocaust statement, Anne as a publishing phenomenon, or just Anne as a long-lost tragic friend. I was just thirteen when I read her book, the same age that she started scribbling her thoughts in that famous checked binder with the little metal clasp. Thirteen is an age when childhood lies like freshly cut grass in recent memory, with puberty and adulthood new temptations soon to be savoured. Her original diary seems to kindle some inner furnace in our souls. The magic of the story is that we want to know more, more about Anne, her life, her family, her silent footsteps after the Annex.
Ruud van der Rol and Rian Verhoeven's photographic remembrance of Anne - Beyond the Diary - is a touching and fitting tribute to the Dutch schoolgirl's legacy. Anna's Quindlen's poignant introduction strikes the right emotional notes for what follows. She says Anne's diary has a kind mystical quality for the adolescents who first encounter it and for the adults left with its spiritual aftertaste. The power is so strong that Quindlen refers to the shiver that took hold of her has she saw pictures of the original diary in the van der Rol and Verhoeven book. She speaks for all of us when she says Anne was not just a victim, a fugitive, and a metaphor but an ordinary girl with blemishes, worried about boys, parents, clothes and a post-war future.
The authors should be congratulated for their presentation of rarely seen photographs of Anne Frank and her family. There is Anne's mother, Edith, with baby Anne seemingly a few hours old, in a Frankfurt hospital. There is Mum and Dad on their honeymoon; Anne and Margot as toddlers sitting on Dad's knee; the young girls dressed beautifully out shopping with Mum in downtown Frankfurt. These are happy times: family, friends, movies, a day at the beach. But a sombre bell tolls...
Like melancholy drapes blocking the sunlight, the remainder of the book catalogues the Frank family in hiding as Nazism throws its fetid shadow. There are photographs of That List - not Schindler's - but Anne's. Her name appears on the passenger manifest for the last transport from Westerbork to Auschiwitz and then, sadly, on the final Red Cross declaration. The photographs, accompanied by the simple text, are a revelation. This book comes as close as any to capturing Anne's allure. But Anne in "Beyond the Diary" is still somehow beyond reach. We love her diary because we seem to share so much with her. Her last footprints show, in fact, that we probably share very little...

Follow-up to the classic
By Janet Morris
This book shares the pictures of concentration camps and tells what happened to the various members of the Frank family after they were found by the German secret police. It also states that had she survived just a few days longer, Anne would've been alive when the people of the concentration camps were released by the Allied troops. This has some heartbreaking information and pictures in it. It's marketted to kids, but some of the pictures may be a bit too difficult for a child to look at on his or her own. If you get this for a child, sit and explain what they are looking at.

... from in between series and it was just as good as the first
By Eric T Knight
This is the second one of Stott's books I've read in the stories from in between series and it was just as good as the first. I was happy to see the return of a favorite character from the first book, the old British adventurer (whose name escapes me right now). Like the first book it was quirky, fast-paced and thoroughly entertaining. I know these are meant for kids, but I definitely enjoyed them.

Highly recommended for older Middle Graders and up.
By Katharina Gerlach (Indie Autorin)
This was an incredibly wonderful read. I bought the book due to the haunting cover, the interesting title, and the sample, and I didn't regret the purchase for a single second. The characters are so real, the evil "guys" so nasty, that I wish the book were available in German too so I could read it to my kids.

not entirely adorable, but adorable bits Between the scary bits!
By Teri Miller
So enjoyed this book! Very unique premise, a girl goes to sleep in the woods and wakes up with bits of herself being transparent. Not gone, not lost, just transparent. As time passes more of her disappears. Her parents are worried, doctors and scientists are baffled. Still, she and her parents manage a giggle here and there.

Then it starts to get scary when she wakes up Between. So many analogies here: sick vs healthy, religions pitted against others, our worst fears are inside our own head, who to trust? No cliffhanger here, satisfying ending, we all wake up to pancakes!!
