A Good Tale of a C-Level Rocker's Journey ...

About six months ago, I never knew who "Stacey Blades" was. I came across L.A. Guns' latest album Hollywood Forever, and was impressed. The whole record is great, and I noticed the great lead playing ... and here I am!

Blades is just about exactly my age, and came of age liking the same stuff I did for the most part, so personally it's a relatable tale, but this is a cool, breezy read for anyone who is chasing a dream - and that includes chasing it in two countries, and at least as many time zones as Stacey! On the technical side, the formatting is a little odd (all text is in bold print), and there are some spelling and grammatical errors, but I was okay with it - the whole thing flows like a hyper conversation, not prose.

The one thing that confuses me after reading the book is, why the heck did he leave L.A. Guns in 2013? He obviously was happy in the band, going by this book, but of course, things can change. Here's to hoping he goes back.

Hard rock fans will definitely like this book.

This is the truth about the Rock 'n Roll lifestyle

I like biographies - not only musicians' biographies. I have read my share of them and, naturally, liked some and didn't like others.

Now...this one stands out, and in a good way: it feels "real".
No fancy vocabulary by some more or less renowned "ghostwriter" that makes you feel you've heard it all before, no fantastic stories you just know can't be all true.

Stacey tells it like it is - sometimes fun sometimes tough, sometimes you're on a high and at other times just plain frustrated. There is no glorification of the rock 'n roll lifestyle - you can tell Stacey Blades really loves this life with all its ups and downs - and it gives you, the fan, a whole new appreciation of what your favourite musicians endure while on the road - and then they still put on a great show as if nothing bad had ever happened and, at least in the case of L.A. Guns, they still take the time to come out and meet their fans, regardless of how exhausted and crappy they may be feeling - and you'd never be able to tell. Hats off to Stacey Blades and his fellow rockers!

This book is a great read and if you love your rock music there is no way you can miss this!

Worth getting!

Pretty entertaining book for fans of L.A. Guns and the 80's Sunset Strip scene. Read it all in one sitting. You get your pretty standard rock star fare of women/drugs/etc. but it's cool to get a viewpoint from a musician that was never in the "A" tier of bands. You come away admiring his obvious passion for the music and his determination to make it in the industry. My only complaint is Stacey seems to be perpetually stuck mentally in the years 84'-89' and it gets frustrating near the end to see that there seems to be little growth with how he deals with the world now. Absolutely worth getting if you're a fan of this music, you will enjoy it, just don't expect any life altering epiphanies within.

The ability to record eye-movements has helped advance our science and led to technological innovations. However, the
growth of eye tracking in recent years has also presented a variety of challenges - in particular the issue of how to design an eye-tracking experiment, and how to analyse the data.

This book is a much needed comprehensive handbook of eye tracking methodology. It describes how to evaluate and acquire an eye-tracker, how to plan and design an eye tracking study, and how to record and analyse eye-movement data. Besides technical details and theory, the heart of this book revolves around practicality - how raw data samples are converted into fixations and saccades using event detection algorithms, how the different representations of eye movement data are calculated using
AOIs, heat maps and scanpaths, and how all the measures of eye movements relate to these processes.

Part I presents the technology and skills needed to perform high-quality research with eye-trackers.
Part II covers the predominant methods applied to the data which eye-trackers record. These include the parsing of raw sample data into oculomotor events, and how to calculate other representations of eye movements such as heat maps and transition matrices.
Part III gives a comprehensive outline of the measures which can be calculated using the events and representations described
in Part II. This is a taxonomy of the measures available to eye-tracking researchers, sorted by type of movement of the eyes and type of analysis.

Kenneth Holmqvist is an associate professor in Cognitive Science at Lund university, where he founded the eye-tracking laboratory in 1995, which later grew into the large Humanities Laboratory. He has worked in a large variety of eye-tracking-based research stretching from reading research and scene perception, over to newspaper reading, advertisement studies and gesture recognition in face-to-face interaction. Kenneth also has expertise in eye tracking used in applied areas, including decision making in supermarkets and research on safety in car driving and air traffic control. In 2000, Kenneth initiated regular master courses in eye-tracking methodology. In 2006, he founded the Scandinavian Conference on Applied Eye-tracking, and in 2008, the international LETA training courses in eye-tracking methodology. Kenneth is the initiator and main author of this book.

Marcus Nystrom received his PhD in Information Theory from the department of Electrical and Information Technology at Lund University, Sweden, in 2008, working with foveated video compression and scene perception. He currently works in the Humanities Laboratory at Lund University. His research interests span eye-tracking methodology in general and analysis of eye-tracking data in particular.

Richard Andersson is a PhD student in cognitive science and technician at the Lund University Humanities Laboratory. He teaches eye-tracking methodology and provides users with help during the formulation, building and analysis stage of the eye-tracking experiments.

Richard Dewhurst is presently a post-doctoral researcher at Lund University Humanities Laboratory, funded by the Swedish Research Council. He completed his PhD on training eye movements at the University of Nottingham in 2009, as part of the Cognition and Language research group. Prior to this he also obtained an MSc in psychological research methods from the University of Nottingham, and a BSc in psychology from the University of Wales, Bangor. His research focuses on attentional mechanisms and eye movements. More specifically how eye movement control changes with learning and experience, and how to devise and implement procedures for improving visual skills through training eye movements.

Halszka Jarodzka works as an assistant professor at the Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies at the Open University of the Netherlands. She holds a Master degree in Psychology and a PhD from the Knowledge Media Research Center, both at the Eberhard-Karls University of Tuebingen, Germany. Halszka's research focuses on the use of eye-tracking and verbal protocols in educational psychology, in particular investigating characteristics of visual expertise with expertise difference studies as well as teaching of biological classi?cation or medical diagnosis based on visual observation and interpretation of dynamic scenes by means of eye movement modelling examples.

Joost van de Weijer defended his PhD thesis at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in 1998. Thereafter he worked as a postdoc researcher at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, and at the Department of Linguistics and Phonetics in Lund. Currently, he is affiliated with the Centre for Languages and Literature and at the Humanities Laboratory, both at Lund University.

This book is amazing, as it offers a fantastic overview to the eye tracking topic. It not only concentrates on hardware setups, analysis methods and parameter description but also summarizes all fundamental aspects of eye tracking research. Great book but it needs to expand the section on methods

I had the bought from two days, I read about two chapters before a colleague from overseas bought it from me (actually, he took it and paid me via Paypal). Now, I have to order the book again. The chapter on methodology is very good, it is worth the book. It fall short on the rest of the chapters, in particular when it comes to metrics. I would suggest for another edition, to expand the methodology part as it just one chapter.

If you are new to eye-tracking, this book might be for you, if you are looking for a comprehensive description on methods, this book is NOT for you.

I highly recommend this book to anyone considering using eye tracking in their research. Not only does it address the theory behind eye-tracking measures, but the practical guide for selecting equipment, setting up the lab and experimental station are often overlooked aspects that leave novice researchers to rely on salesman advice (rather than understanding their true needs), or trying to conduct research in an inappropriate space that leaves their data rife with noise.

Prior to coming to Smithsonian Folkways, Burgess managed major label artists with top ten chart hits and international touring schedules, including Spandau Ballet, King, Colonel Abrams, Five Star, Living In A Box, Shriekback, and New Edition.

Burgess incorporates real world experiences into this incredibly valuable look into the history of music production. I don't think many people appreciate how disruptive and transformative technologies affected today's music.

Nathan (and Ishmael) are back at their best!

Yes! In Ashes Born shows both author and protagonist back at their best~ Even though Nathan Lowell doesn't seem able to actually write a bad book, the final installment in the Solar Clipper series, Owner's Share, was so disconnected from the character we've followed from the day he stepped aboard a freighter as a mess hand to the day he stepped off as Captain. The Ismael Wang we saw in Owner's Share was lost and foundering, and though the book was a good enough read in itself, it let the series down. And yet, people do lose their way, and bad things do happen. I'd missed his cronies from the Lois McKendrick in the books since his Academy interlude, and though he was always resourscefull and ready to stand up for the right cause, Ishmael had lost some of the spark that made him such a great character.

In Ashes Born, the spark, and many of his old crew, are back. Owner's Share left him wealthy, but rudderless, nursing the loss of the love he'd just found and without a clue as to what to do next. If home is where you go to heal, that would be the Academy for Ishmael, and when he arrives he finds that it's not unusual for Captains to come back to lick their wounds and heal for a bit. His first pleasant surprise is that the Commandant is none other than Alys McKendrick Giggone, his first captain and mentor, and the person who was responsible for his going to the Academy. And Aly's isn't alone, no Sar. She's brought a few of the crew along to her new posting, and for a few chapters it's old home week.

The most notable presence lacking in the later books was Ishmael's partner in escapades, Philip "Pip" Carstairs, and Ish is as delighted as the readers will be when it turns out that all that scheming and calculating he did in the first few books has paid off, not in wealth like our captain, but in the trader's community of economic analysts, Pip's a rock star...and Ish has arrived just in time for the concert...er symposium he's keynote speaker at.

That's all great fun, but it's only stage setting. Pip has a plan, but if you've read the earlier books you probably guessed that already. What he needs is somebody to captain a ship and test out his theories, and what Ish needs is something to do.

Nathan Lowell could spin the knd of yarn that will keep you up till it's done on just that alone, but when Pip and Ishmael head out into the deep dark this time, they'll be facing greater dangers than the cold between the stars...and best of all, we can come along to share the adventure.

A welcome new addition to the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper

Readers who've already enjoyed the Traders Tales series from Nathan Lowell's Golden Age of the Solar Clipper universe will enjoy this book. Those who haven't read them yet but enjoy a carefully crafted, steadily paced story with well developed characters will enjoy it equally well and if that includes you I strongly recommend reading the first series, starting with Quarter Share,

The author is a master storyteller of the old school, who creates worlds of the imagination that can gently mesmerize without a single shot fired, drop of blood spilled or blow struck unless it serves the story, and even then it's rare enough in hos books compared to perhaps too many others in the science fiction genre. He creates characters who are real people, who put their pants on one leg at a time in the morning be they good or bad and work for a living if they can, just like us, not superheroes and monsters. Would that there were more like him.

I was a sailor in my time and so I know something of ships and ports on this planet. But I would be able to see the spaceships' compartments and space station docks, bars, eateries and other settings in my minds eye with such ease that I could have been there myself even if I'd never served because Nathan Lowell writes of ordinary things with extraordinary insight that paints his stories and the life itself in a future merchant space fleet in vivid detail.

A good part 1 - of hopefully a great story.

I thought for a while on how many stars to give this book. I wanted to give it 5, but just could not justify it. Don't get me wrong, this is a good book and well worth reading. But "I Love It", no not great.

As you may have figured: Ish is back, which should be a big clue that there are other books out there with these same characters. and this book does a good job of bringing these same characters back with little change in their personality. The story is solid and looks to be building to a decent plot. Note: I said "building". Unlike he books in the first series (Quartershare -> Owner's Share), this book leaves the reader at a definable placeholder in the full story. Rather than being book1, it felt more like part 1.

I'm hoping this is because the interweaving release of the upcoming "Smuggler's Tales" series, makes this a good stopping point to now start looking at the "other" perspective.

If you are a good Ish fan, yeah, give this a read, you'll enjoy it.
If new to Ishmael, you could start here and do just fine, but you would probably be better served to start Quarter share instead.

I'm looking forward to the next release, I have a feeling this will be a case of the sum being greater than all of its parts.

Excellent investment for quick content coverage

Warning for buyers: be aware that the Examkrackers (EK) 10th ed. verbal reasoning book may be repeating pages 85-102, and missing pages 102-121. I purchased this package from "Dirtcheapbooks4u" and it arrived with damage and had the defective verbal reasoning book just described in the sentence above. I'm not sure if this is a manufacturer error where these defective books are being dished off in bulk to third party companies or if it was just a random fluke. I made EK aware of the issue and their 10th edition in stock seems to be fixed.

Now for the differences between EK 9th and 10th editions; The 10th edition fixes many mistakes from the 9th edition, thus saving an individual a days worth of correcting errors from the EK errata.

I would like to address the 3 biggest changes;
1) The actual text of the 10th ed. biology 1 book, now labeled "biochemistry" instead of "biomolecules" has included some more extensive research and content.
2) The Psychology & Sociology book in the 10th ed. has been amplified with more terms and sufficient content.
3) The five science books now have updated 30-minute exams. Instead of just 3 passages, it is now 4 passages and 5 discrete questions per chapter exam. The first 3 passages of the science books are no different from the 9th and 10th ed.

The other four books; Physics, Chemistry, Biology 2, and Verbal Reasoning seem to be nearly 85% identical to the 9th edition. I will note that the verbal reasoning strategy has had some changes that were noticeable, especially in chapter 4. Basically, EK seems to have updated their verbal strategy. I would just be cautious and check the 10th ed. verbal book to make sure you don't receive a defective. Overall, the 10th addition has been revamped and corrected for precision and accuracy. Excellent investment for quick content coverage.

This is an initial rating/review for the package since I haven't had time to thoroughly look through the material. Books arrived in new condition, earlier than expected. Also, I checked the Verbal book for the errors as mentioned in some of the other reviews, and I haven't found them. It appears Examkrackers has resolved it since then and we're getting the right copies now. I've heard good things about this study set so I'm excited (actually dreaded) to get started. Should I come across anything major, I'll revise this review but for now, good buy!

Absolutely Beautiful

The first thing I noticed about The Art of Blizzard was it's weight. This is one big, hefty tome.

Chock full of full color art from front to back, this book is amazing. It covers the Warcraft, World of Warcraft, Diablo and Starcraft series. I have been taking my time going through it, because a lot of the artwork has notes on the background from the artists or other Blizzard staff that oftentimes sheds an interesting or amusing tidbit that you may never have known...like the Pit Lord's teeth were based on Gary Busey's teeth.

I own a number of art books for anime and video games, and I have to say the quality of the book is top notch. Quality heavyweight paper, sewn binding, many full or double page portraits in vibrant color.

I have spent about 3 hours reading it tonight after opening it for the first time. Looking at the beautiful details in everything and at times the evolution of things and reading all the little side comments, has certainly captured my attention.

If you are a fan of any of Blizzard's games or enjoy good fantasy art, I cannot recommend this book high enough. I look forward to reading more tomorrow. Absolutely beautiful, and worth every penny.

I was always peripherally aware of Warcraft, Diablo, and Starcraft since the 1990s, but I'd never really delved into them until after purchasing this book. Man, did I miss out on some great characters and awesome art. Well, since I got this thick, beautifully illustrated tome for under $50, I've been searching online for the backstories to the characters and their universes. If I were pressed, I would have to say that Starcraft is my absolute favorite of the three. All of the art, from the pencil drawings, pen & ink, and fully painted illustrations are breathtaking, many of them in the style of the heroic illustrations of Earl Norem and Joe Jusko. This is the kind of art that inspires me to keep on creating. This book is worth every dollar I paid for it and I greatly recommend to anyone who loves great fantasy and science-fiction/space opera artwork. Whether you're an artist, a gamer, or a fan, this magnificent book should definitely be added to your collection while it's still in print and available at less than cover price.

Great Book, Some Old Art, some New Art

This is my first review for anything, so that alone should say something...

Let me start off by saying I own all of the blizzard art books that are available. From The Art of Warcraft to the Art of Pandaria, art of the TCG, Diablo3, SC2, Behind the cinematic process, and now this one.

Quality: This book is great quality, better than any of the previous publishings. Its big. Like text book big. Except instead of math, or biology, its full of badassery from the minds of the artists that shape the worlds made at blizzard. Although its only 375 pages, it still feels like a mighty tome. The pages are nice and thick. The binding is tight and feels like it can take some abuse. The dust jacket fits perfect and doesnt slip as im looking through the book, which annoys me about a lot of art books. The pages are full of vibrant glossy pictures, most of the paintings are nice and big and really show off the detail.

Content: I was pretty hesitant to order this book originally. I think 45 bucks is a great deal since the base price is 75, but since i own all of the other art books i was concerned i was going to spend that 45 bucks on a shiny new book with all the old artwork. Which it essentially is. However, Im glad i ended up purchasing it because there is actually a lot of previously unreleased art along with a some additions of old art i had seen before but had not been previously published. For example, there is some old artwork i have seen on box coveres, or free trial disks, or free trial flyers, that ive never seen published in another book. The majority of those pieces are actually blown up to a nice size you can take the time to appreciate. There is old artwork that i recognize from the original game play instruction books, especailly from star craft and diablo. Which is awesome because those instructions are long gone and forgotten, but the art is now available in this book. I read some of the other reviews and people were complaining about how there was no new art and screw blizz for not adding anything new. They clearly didnt even take the time to look at the book. Besides the stuff i just mentioned, there is a section entitled, Fallen Games, which includes 17 pages full of concept art for games that never went into production. 17 pages of Metzen and Samwise sketches. Amazing. Theres also a chunky section of art that was done for company holiday cards. Ive seen some before, but most are new to me and are pretty hilarious. These pieces are some of the best because you really see the character and personality of the artist coming through the paintings. Additionally, there is a handful of random sketches and paintings added to each of the other sections. Layout is pretty good with most pages. I also enjoyed that there are some comments from the artists on a good majority of the pages. Its cool to read their thoughts about the artwork and the company, especially reading stories about their experiences through the early days of Blizzard. There is a chapter in here for all the major blizzard franchises, so for someone who doesnt own any of the other art books, you get a broad range of the best art work.

Overview: This is an awesome book. Its big, Vibrant, and Detailed. It includes a decent amount of unreleased and unpublished artwork, at least enough to satisfy a customer like myself who already has the previous art books. The commentary is great, and gives good insight on the creative minds that forged Blizzard. Books like this always make me appreciate the thought and effot that went into making these games. its also very inspiring for an aspiring artist. I have no complaints, and am very happy with the purchase.

Very Good Book

This book was written by pioneering metal detector engineers who work for, or have worked for, major metal detector manufacturers. Especially considering that it's a technical book written by certified geeks for other certified geeks it is extremely well written and readable, and frequently funny and entertaining. The authors present information with a very human touch and electronic engineers and hobbyists alike can benefit from it.

This book thoroughly covers all of the metal detecting technologies, from BFO to Pulse Induction, search coil design, and just about everything relating to metal detector design and even construction details.

If I had to point out a shortcoming or make a suggestion it would be that the authors were maybe too thorough and spent a few pages debunking dowsing, which in my opinion was a waste of paper. However, that is only a few pages I'm critical of out of the 282 pages in this book and that's only because as part of this review I felt obligated to find a real or imagined fault somewhere in this great work.

Clearly not for everyone, but it's a must-have for hobbyists who are building their own detectors and a should-have for anyone with a serious interest in metal detectors or electronics in general.

ALMOST MORE THAN YOU WANT TO KNOW

This book is filled with classic analog circuits of the sort many Forrest Mims fans grew up with. A careful study of this book will reveal the inside secrets of the metal detector industry with perhaps a slight bit more emphasis on the Tesoro designs (regarded by many to be amongst the best detectors). The math is easy, almost too easy for the average EE, but may be a bit much for some technicians not well grounded in electronics theory. In general I found the book enjoyable and fairly thorough with regards to analog circuitry involved and its integration into the overall MD design. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an electronics background interested in MD subcircuits and integrated packages. A five star colaberative effort between George Overton and Carl Mooreland! Certainly a great education and starting point for those interested in building their own detectors or experimenting with their circuits and components.

This book met and exceeded my expectations. It does a great job walking you through the basics of coils, vlf, and pi circuits. It also has a great appendix which lists tons of patents and papers if and when you want to go deeper into the rabbit hole.
