NEWSFLASH: Busyness and Productivity are not the same thing

Heard about this book on one of Tai Lopez's videos, and it is put together very well. You can read this book start to finish, or skim through (as I did) to find what is applicable to you. Even better, each section has a "Estimated Read Time" at the beginning so that you can gauge how long the chapter will take you, or if you only have a few minutes, you can skip to a chapter that matches your time.

For me, the biggest take aways were the Rule of 3 (in which you organize your life to have 3 things on your To-Do list), brain dumping (where you right down all the thoughts that you have at that moment and reference later), and the Collection Box (which is similar to the Brain Dump, except you jot thoughts as they come to you while you're working on a task). I use the "Collection Box" at work to focus more, and I find that it has helped bit by bit in exercising my attention muscle. I also made a note to turn off all notifications during work, so that I don't get distracted by the buzzing and pings on the lock screen.

I've only been practicing the techniques for a couple of weeks, so interested to see how this turns out over the year!

I would rate it higher if only it did the work for me of making me more productive, so I wouldn't have to do it myself. ;- )

Other than that, the book is stellar. Chris's personal account of his own productivity experiments are very engaging, and the book is chock full of great tips, especially the six things one can do when experiencing procrastination.

Easy read with good info

I wasn't really sure if I would like this book as I've read a lot of productivity books and he is 20 years younger than me. But I was curious to see what he learned during his year of productivity. I was surprised to find it to be an easy, informative and entertaining read. He provides easy exercises to incorporate what he learned into your life. I didn't expect to find any earth shattering new info (which I didn't) but I loved how he structured it around the ideas of utilizing time, energy, and attention, a concept I'm not sure I've seen before. I also appreciate how much research he did in his project. The book overall was a great review for me and I would definitely recommend it.

About "Psychological Trauma"

This book is about psychological trauma; the trauma itself, it's consequenses and the effects of traumatic stress on body function. The book is well written and well organized. It is interesting to read about the historical development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to discover how different the consequences of trauma can be. The only drawback is that it's quite old for this area of psychology, which has developed fast in the last few years. Therefore, the author doesn't mention new methods for treating PTSD like EGG-biofeedback and EMDR. But as mentioned a well written book about an interesting field of science.

Van der Kolk's book is cutting edge.

Bessel van der Kolk is a psychiatrist who is doing brain scans on traumatized individuals to discover how trauma affects the brain. His research is expanding our understanding of human behavior. He offers strategies to heal trauma that actually change and improve the functioning of the brain. This book is important reading for those in the mental health field and for those interested in understanding human behavior.

Great book

A lot has changed about the subject of psychological trauma. Yes, there are more tools but the ideas and insight in this book are valuable and a must for the well-read provider. Van der Kolk is an expert and the information contained here makes this book a treasure. Just because a book is new does not make it better than this one. Why, one can still learn by reading Freud.

Preface

This book is intended for use in the core electronics courses for undergraduate electrical and computer engineering majors. The book frequently takes the designer's point of view in discussing circuits, illustrates design with numerous examples, shows how to test circuit designs using SPICE, and provides numerous open-ended design problems with which students can practice.

WHAT'S NEW IN THE SECOND EDITION

The entire book has been reorganized and rewritten with an eye toward reducing its length and making it more student friendly. Integrated-circuit techniques are treated earlier and receive greater emphasis throughout. The needs of computer-engineering students are addressed by treating the switching behavior of devices early in the book, adding a chapter on CMOS logic circuits, and adding a discussion of data converters. Several motivational examples are provided in the "Anatomy of a Design" sections as asides from the main text to show how interesting circuits can be designed using the material learned to that point in the book. For example just after the chapters on op-amps and diodes, the design of a function generator is illustrated. The introduction and the treatment of external amplifier characteristics have been condensed into the first chapter. MOSFETs are emphasized over JFETs. Op-amps are treated in a single chapter. The treatment of device physics has been shortened and appears in the various chapters on an as needed basis. The chapter on SPICE has been eliminated because most students learn to use SPICE in their circuits courses.

ASSUMED BACKGROUND AND LEVEL OF PRESENTATION

The background assumed is a first course in circuit analysis. In the beginning, the level of presentation is appropriate for an introductory core course. Starting with Chapter 7, the level gradually increases to that appropriate for juniors having a stronger interest in the subject. CONTENT

This book supports a wide variety of course plans. More than enough material is provided for a two-semester (or three-quarter) course sequence, allowing topic selection suited to the interests of the instructor and students.

Chapter 1 contains an overview of electronics and treats the external characteristics of amplifiers. The first several sections acquaint students with the big picture and illustrate how the details studied in this book fit into that picture. Usually, I assign this material for reading but don't spend class time on it. Next, we introduce basic amplifier concepts including gain, input resistance, output resistance, frequency response, and circuit models for amplifiers. The chapter concludes with a discussion of differential amplifiers, setting the stage for op-amps.

Chapter 2 treats operational amplifier circuits including basic amplifiers, imperfections of op-amps, integrators, and differentiators. The discussion of amplifiers gives immediate application for the concepts (that were introduced in Chapter 1) of gain, input resistance, output resistance, and ideal amplifier types.

Chapter 3 treats diodes and diode circuits, including load lines, ideal diodes, rectifiers, wave shapers, logic circuits, voltage regulators, device physics, and switching behavior. The small-signal-equivalent-circuit concept is introduced in Section 3.8 setting the stage for BJT and FET amplifier analysis.

"Anatomy of a Circuit Design: A Function Generator" is set aside from the main text and appears between Chapters 3 and 4. It shows students how the material from the first three chapters can be used in designing a useful and interesting circuit.

Chapter 4 covers BJT characteristics, load-line analysis, large-signal models, biasing, small-signal equivalent circuit analysis, the common-emitter amplifier, the emitter follower, and use of the BJT as a switch in logic circuits.

Chapter 5 contains a similar treatment of FETs with the main emphasis on MOSFETs. If desired, the order of Chapters 5 and 6 can be reversed with little difficulty.

"Anatomy of a Circuit Design: A Multistage Amplifier" appears immediately after chapter 5 and illustrates how a multistage amplifier can be designed using what was learned from Chapters 4 and 5.

Chapter 6 treats digital logic circuits with very strong emphasis on CMOS. Basic logic circuit concepts, the resistor-pull-up NMOS inverter, the CMOS inverter, propagation delay, NOR and NAND gates, dynamic logic, and transmission gates are covered. Differential and multistage integrated amplifiers including IC bias techniques are treated in Chapter 7.

Chapter 8 covers amplifier frequency response, including the Miller effect, the BJT hybrid model, and common amplifier configurations.

Chapter 9 examines feedback and oscillators. Sections 9.1 through 9.4 deal with types of feedback and their effects on gain and impedances. Then several design examples are given in Section 9.5. Sections 9.6 through 9.9 treat transient response, frequency response, and compensation of feedback amplifiers. Several examples of feedback amplifiers are discussed in Section 9.10. Finally, oscillator principles are discussed in Sections 9.11 and 9.12.

"Anatomy of a Circuit Design: A Cardiac Pacemaker" appears after Chapter 9 and shows an interesting application of many of the circuits and concepts discussed in the book.

Output stages and power supplies are presented in Chapter 10 including thermal considerations, power devices, Class A and B amplifiers, linear voltage regulators, and power-supply design.

Chapter 11 treats active filters, tuned circuits, impedance-matching networks, LC oscillators, and crystal oscillators.

Chapter 12 considers comparators, timer circuits and data converters, including the Schmitt trigger, multivibrator circuits, the 555 timer IC, digital-to-analog converters, and analog-to-digital converters.

Finally, "Anatomy of a Circuit Design: A Precision AC to DC Converter," illustrates another practical design using many of the concepts treated earlier in the book.

CHAPTER DEPENDENCY

The first five chapters form the foundation upon which the remainder of the book rests. The order of coverage of the remaining chapters is extremely flexible. Chapter 5 on MOSFETs can be covered before Chapter 4 on BJTs if desired.

excellent - but 1st ed is better

Great book - the best compared to many others in the market. Most university entry level electronics texts are useless to students - too damn hard to read. Most authors were probably too busy trying to impress - resulting in something which is, yes, complete and blah and blah, but totally useless to students. No, not this book - it took pain to ease a reader into the material. But, unfortunately, the 2nd ed has lost much of that refreshing "innocence" of the 1st ed and conformed to be more like others in the market - too bad.

This book covers many of the topics in Sedra and Smith, but does so in a very understandable manner. Examples are well chosen and clearly explained. Far clearer than Sedra and Smith.

My choice for an introductory book covering transistor circuits.

Good for learning electonics w/PSPICE

This book was required for my electronics class and the only thing it helped me learn was using PSPICE. The explanations of the operations of different devices are not thorough enough. I ended up using the Sedra/Smith Microelectronics for learning the different concepts. I used this book for only required homework problems. I would recommend Sedra/Smith, Microelectronics, for a complete and thorough introduction into electronics and semiconductor devices.

ONE One Major Goal You Should Have
When people seek investments, they tend to have one goal in mind: They want to beat the market.

Don’t agree? Then tell me why you compare the performance of your investments with the S&P 500 Stock Index. You’re gauging your success by comparing your investment results with the overall market, as measured by the S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, or some other stock-market index. If you’re beating the market, you’re happy. If you’re not, you’re unhappy.

Guess what? Trying to beat the market is the wrong goal.

In fact, that’s a disastrous goal. Taking that approach sets you up for failure.

Why? It’s really very simple. And we need look no further back than 2008 to understand why. In 2008 the S&P 500 lost 38.5%.I 1 If you lost only 30%, congratulations! You beat the market!

Somehow I doubt you (or your spouse) would be thrilled at such news.

Thus we must remember that “beating the market” isn’t the point. In fact, only one thing matters when it comes to investing: achieving financial security. That is your one major goal.

Think about it. The purpose of investing is to help you achieve your goals, whether that means sending your kids to college, retiring comfortably, or caring for aging parents. It’s financial security that matters, not some benchmark that has no relevance to your personal life.

People who focus on the stock market are missing the point. You need to emphasize your goals.

Excellent! This is an exceptionally good book for a tyro investor. It is free of jargon and complicated mathematical formulas and is an easy read so is not in the least intimidating for the tyro investor. When someone is first learning how to invest he or she must sort through the plethora of misinformation, wrong information, and nonsense that is out there in the investment arena. But Ric Edelman leads the tyro investor through the tangled jungle of the absolute multitude of investment nonsense out there in the world and gives the reader the simple tried and true in an easy to understand manner. I would recommend this book to anyone just learning how to invest. (I have already purchased a dozen copies of this book myself to give copies to friends and relatives. )

Really good practical advice

Really good practical advice. Not a lot of surprising info given the data that is presented and what we all have learned throughout life, but it is good to hear it from someone else. The way that the data is presented and explained is great. I will be purchasing this book for nieces/nephews and tell them that they can skip a lot of the anguish and hard life lessons if they really pay attention to the messages in this book.

The author put his ideas into a tiny sized book and and then triple spaced everything!!! All it is is a pitch for you to turn over all your money and let his company "wisely" invest it for you. This is a scam. Go on the internet and read how poorly his company took care of other people's money.

This is a thorough handbook covering pertinent information in gynecology and obstetrics that is designed to be carried in the pocket and to point-of-care settings. The purpose is to provide a quick and easily accessible manual for obstetrics and gynecology issues. It is not designed for directed reading, although many chapters do a very thorough job of covering the material. The online format is nice and I appreciate that it is linked to Inkling, although the code redemption required using a different site. The intended audience is medical students and residents, although other care providers may appreciate the book. It is unique in that it depends on a lot of residents for input, which is a nice feature as it allows input from those who would benefit the most. The other authors are all credible authorities. This is a handy pocket book for the field. It is designed to be used in a triage setting or for quick location of information. Chapters such as the one on alloimmunization and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy give a concise description of the pathophysiology followed by clinical management. In fact, all chapters are heavily geared toward clinical management. More flow charts would be appreciated. The treatment section for UTIs and STIs are well done and the easy access to medication doses is appreciated. This book functions as a more comprehensive version of the "red book" -- a pocket book designed for quick 5-minute digestions. This is a simple, straightforward, and well done pocket reference. The online features are nice and this will serve medical students well during their introduction to the field.
