Chris Bonington's Everest, by Sir Chris Bonington

May 29, 2003 marks the 50th anniversary of the first climbing of Mount Everest. Chris Bonington was the first to scale Everest 'the hard way' - by the south-west ridge - and he has taken part in three other expeditions. No other mountaineer, writer or photographer has as much experience of Everest. His last climb, in 1985 at 50, was a personal summit. Here he tells the story of his attempts on Everest, the triumphs and the tragedies, illustrated from his own archive of photographs and diaries of other climbers.

Review
'Chris Bonington's Everest is a powerful introduction to the world of mountaineering and a fitting tribute to a magnificent mountain and the heroic climbers who try to reach its summit. Backed up with solid accounts and stuning photography recounting seminal moments in the mountain's history, this is an epic read about the triumphs of a great man who stands as an icon of British mountaineering. Sir Chris, we salute you.' GLOBAL (Jan 2004)

From the Back Cover
EVEREST, the world's highest mountain peak, has a magnificence, a compulsive attraction that has lured so many climbers over the years. One such was Chris Bonington, Britain's best-known climber. He first accepted the challenge of Everest in the early 1970s and has since made no less than four expeditions to its different faces.

His first, unsuccessful, attempt was on the formidable South West Face that had repulsed so many expeditions. But in 1975 he returned to lead a successful ascent of this face, which put the first Britons on the summit.

In 1982 he went back with a pared-down team for an attempt on Everest's North East Ridge. Tragically, Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker were killed, and the expedition abandoned. Following this, Bonington vowed he was finished with Everest, but in 1985 the lure became too strong to resist and he joined a Norwegian expedition to tackle the South East Ridge route. At 50 Bonington recognized that this was probably the last opportunity for him to achieve for himself something he had helped others to reach--the chance to stand on the world's highest point. This time he went to the summit.

Bonington's original accounts of his four Everest expeditions appeared in his books, Everest South West Face (1973), Everest the Hard Way (1976), Everest the Unclimbed Ridge (1983, written with Charles Clarke) and The Everest Years (1986). To mark the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest, he has drawn upon these volumes and the diaries of the time to write and reflect on the changes that have come to the mountain area he loves and the developments that have transformed the horizons of Himalayan climbing. The result is an absorbing first-hand account of one man's fascination with a mountain, illustrated by some of the most remarkable photographs taken during the expeditions, which give a real sense of the variety, beauty and majesty of Everest. This very personal book is also an overview of the evolution of Himalayan climbing during the last 50 years by one of its most acclaimed exponents.

About the Author
Chris Bonington has taken part in 19 Himalayan expeditions and combined a career as a mountaineer with the writing of fifteen books, four of which were about Everest. Sir Chris was knighted in 1992 for services to mountaineering. He is heading the RGS/Alpine Club's Everest Celebrations Committee.

An easy and excellent read for all ages about life's basics.
By A Customer
This little black book of few pages is written in a simple and straightforward style. It is not about basketball, it is not about relationships, it is not about winning. This book is about feeling good about yourself no matter who you are, no matter how talented, no matterhow young or old, it is written for either male or female. I have given at least 20 copies of this book away as gifts. Had I known it would go out of print I would have bought more. I read from it to children as young as 5 and as old as 90. Getting back up after a failed attempt, learning the basics of what you want to succeed in, and playing well together as a team. Jordan reminds us in this book that though he can walk on air he usually relies on the basics of the game of basketball; dribble, pivot, pass and shoot. Slam dunks are fine but in a pinch the basics are what carries him. He also tell the reader that there are many excellent ball players out there but the reason the Bulls have had a sustained championship status is that they learned to play together as a team. A must for anyone who wants to succeed or who wants to motivate and coach others to success. I have found that kids listen when I read from the book because it was written by Michael Jordan.

Re-print this book Random House!
By drey samuelson
I read every week to a young inner-city boy, and by far the best book that we've ever read is this book--and I wanted to buy it for him as a present for his graduation from elementary school. If anyone has access to a copy that I could purchase for this gift, please e-mail me a message to:
Drey_Samuelson@Johnson.Senate.Gov
In my strongly-held view, this book should be put back in print and copies should be mailed out to every inner-city school in the country (EVERY school in the country, if funds would permit). Better yet, a video of Michael Jordan speaking passages of it to the camera should be sent to every inner-city school in the country so that it can be shared with classes. I found it inspiring myself, and I'm 47 years old...

An important and powerful educational teaching tool
By essedser@aol.com
This book is an important and powerful teaching tool that has been invaluable, to me as a middle school teacher of reading, in teaching lifeskills, strategies for school success, self-esteem and self-discipline. Middle school youngsters love the book and can relate to it and understand it well. The book lends itself to invigorating and enlightening group discussions. I have been using it for the last 3 years, at the beginning of my school year, to start the year in a positive, upbeat and progressive manner. I have developed a curriculum based on the book which I would like to get published. I have shared my teaching techniques, related to this book, with other colleaques. Please re-stock this book ASAP.

Enlightening the World: Encyclopedia, The Book That Changed the Course of History, by Philipp Blom

In 1777 several of the world's greatest men gathered together to create a book that would champion rationalism, free thinking, and secularism--the Encyclopédie. Such leading minds as Diderot, Rousseau, and Voltaire conceived of a work that would tear down the social order dominated by the Crown and Church, a brave act at a time when heresy could still be punished by death. During the years it took to produce all twenty-seven volumes, the writers faced exile, jail, and censorship. But when they were done, they had created a book that would provide the foundation for the Enlightenment and change the world forever. Novelist and historian Philipp Blom presents the story behind the sixteen-year struggle to create the Encyclopédie, the men who wrote it, the powerful forces that tried to suppress it, and the tremendous impact it had on the world.

From Publishers Weekly
In the dark corners of Paris's bohemian cafes, salons and theaters, some of the greatest European thinkers of the 18th century congregated, and it was here that the Encyclopédie was born. The most enormous publishing effort of the day, the Encyclopédie would be neither the first of its kind nor ultimately the largest. But in this meticulously researched historical narrative, journalist and historian Blom (To Have and to Hold) argues that the Encyclopédie represents a turning point in the tide of intellectual history and is the last veritable record of Europe's ideas, traditions, politics, economics, tools and restrictions before the French Revolution. The bulk of Blom's narrative is driven by the drama that occurred among the work's many contributors and between them and the society in which they lived. The writers, many of whom stood for free thought and secularism, struggled with censorship, exile and even prison. And, as is revealed here through epistolary exchanges, on a personal level, the famed band of philosophes-including Diderot, D'Alembert, Voltaire, Grimm and Rousseau-were divided by mistresses, money, manipulation and, most of all, ego. Blom takes the reader through these events and through the Encyclopédie itself in a thorough and engaging way, and he makes a strong case for the work's importance in shaping philosophy and political thought for years to come. This book is a welcome read for European historians and for those interested in learning about one of the foremost works of the Enlightenment.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Late in this absorbing history of the most notorious European publication of the eighteenth century, Blom says that the Encyclopedie marks the end more than the beginning of an era. Intended in part to describe, and thereby honor, the shop crafts on which urbanizing Europe relied for the material base of civilization (apparel, foodstuffs, building materials, utensils and tools, etc.), the 28-volume work, 25 years in the making, became the largest resource on preindustrial means of production. In mid-eighteenth-century Paris, the church and the monarchy saw (accurately) in the Encyclopedie the uprising of materialism, atheism, and republicanism against them. Many Encyclopedie contributors were harassed, imprisoned, and/or exiled by Louis XV's government, spurred on by Jesuits and Jansenists, who, otherwise at each other's throats, united against the godless Encyclopedie. In the end, the new age of venture capitalism won out. The Encyclopedie's bookseller-financiers were too heavily invested to let it die. They made out like bandits, too, while the intellectuals who wrote it had to settle for fame (the principal writer of the last several volumes didn't even get a complimentary set). The sympathetic hero of the whole endeavor was Denis Diderot, leading editor throughout, who was legally obliged, for the sake of the Encyclopedie, to suppress his now-classic novels and essays during his lifetime. The Encyclopedie's story is both epic and epochal, and Blom tells it intelligently, gracefully, and stylishly. Ray Olson

Review

“Superb... Blom artfully brings to life the 27-volume work that symbolized its era, the ‘Encyclopedie.”--The Philadelphia Inquirer

“With exceptional interpretive skill, Philipp Blom provides a fascinating study--replete with wonderful stories, racy gossip, and grand personalities--of the arduous struggle to produce the work that became a testament to humanity: The Encyclopedia.”-- Stephen Eric Bronner, Rutgers University

“...not only a tribute to a very worthy project of enlightenment and liberation; it is also a thoroughly good read.”--The Literary Review

“Blom, a journalist, novelist, and translator, provides a rich, informative, and lively history of the Encyclopédie and those who worked on it, going so far as to recover some of its unsung heroes, e.g., Louis de Jaucourt who provided some 20,000 entries. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries.”--Library Journal

“Meticulously researched.... thorough and engaging... this book is a welcome read for European historians and for those interested in learning about one of the foremost works of the Enlightenment. “-- Publishers Weekly

“Mr. Blom does not attempt to sustain his title’s sweeping claim, and perhaps this is just as well; for his own strengths lies less in measuring the effect and reception of lies than in telling stories about the lives and passions of their makers. This he doe with considerable skill, painting colorful sketches of the leading ‘Encyclopedists” of the 18th Century.”--Darrin McMahon, Wall Street Journal June 2005

“The Encyclopedie’s story is both epic and epochal, and Blom tells it intelligentlu, gracefully, and stylishly.”--Ray Olsen, Booklist ”Philipp Blom is a talented stylist who exploits a variety of narrative forms while tackling a wide range of topics.” --H-France Review

Encyclopedie
By Stephen Balbach
Philipp Blom is a delightful writer and this is a fascinating and highly entertaining history of the great French Encyclopedie created over the course of 25 turbulent years in the mid-1700s. Despite the title, this is really a book about people, with the encyclopedie as thread to tie the stories together. I have very little background in 18th C European/French history Blom makes it entirely accessible for novice and expert alike (although I suspect many of the stories here are well worn, but new to me, and well told). Probably the greatest compliment is I want to learn more about those involved, probably starting with a biography of Rousseau. This book easily sits besides Simon Winchester's "The Meaning of Everything" and Henry Hitchings "Defining the World". As another reviewer mentioned, anyone with an interest in Wikipedia will find it fascinating.

Fascinating view of both the personalities and the project they undertook
By S. McGee
This is the kind of book that even such dedicated encyclopedistes as Diderot, the Chevalier de Jaucourt and d'Alembert would have found hard to classify. Yes, it's history -- but is it political history? social history? biography? philosophy?

In fact, Blom's work is a masterful combination of all these, making it as unique and intriguing as the original Encyclopedie must have seemed to its 18th century readers, confronted as they were with a world where the amount of knowledge available (theoretically) to them grew exponentially by the day. How to keep pace with this? How could they maintain an understanding of the world and their place in it? That, as described by Blom, was one of the catalysts for the creation of the Encyclopedie, but the goals of its contributors and chief architects, especially Denis Diderot, were quite different. Rather than reinforce the existing social order and its underpinnings -- theological dogma as conveyed by the Catholic Church and absolute monarchy, represented in the person of Louis XV -- they embarked on a mission to portray an alternative world, one in which reason prevailed and where an artisan's talents and knowledge were valued as much as those of a pleasure-loving monarch. Often, this could only be accomplished indirectly -- as Blom shows by pointing out how thoughtful readers could fill in the gaps between the lines in the entries on drone bees, who served only as courtiers to the queen bee and didn't work for a living but lived off the efforts of the worker bees.

Blom effortlessly weaves together the political and social background against which Diderot and his collaborators toiled for 16 years to assemble what became a 28-volume opus with the details of their lives and experiences, from Diderot's incarceration in the Chateau de Vincennes (to obtain his liberty, he had to forego a career as a professional philosophe -- devastating to him on one level, but something that forced him into his lifelong work on the Encylopedie) to the likely impact of Rousseau's hereditary incontinence problem on his anti-social behavior and ultimate rupture with the cosmopolitan encyclopedistes who had previously been his closest friends. Especially intriguing are the glimpses of other personalities, less familiar to history, such as de Jaucourt and the Baron Holbach.

When Diderot embarked on his life work -- reluctantly enough -- he was not a member of any prestigious Academy and, in Blom's words, "was known only to his friends and to the police." Today, he is widely known -- but ironically, to many, it is because of his endless travails on the Encyclopedie, a project that often felt like a millstone around his neck. As for the encyclopedie itself, while it did serve as an intellectual precursor to the Revolutionary-era thinkers who would follow the encyclopedistes, the work itself was as much a mark of the end of the world that Diderot and his companions knew. It would serve to preserve the traditional artisanal crafts that would shortly give way to industrialized processes. Meanwhile, the creation of the book itself -- with even censors tacitly acknowledging the importance of the project to the French economy -- served, as Blom points out, as a sign that the age of capitalism had arrived. "Questions of true religion, of dogma, of respect for authority, even of royal power, could be subjugated to the higher interests of economic wellbeing if this was judged necessary."

I can't comment from a scholarly perspective on the nuances of Blom's portrayal of Diderot and his collaborators, but the book is a lively and compelling introduction to the era and the subject that anyone interested in the topics it concerns -- political philosophy, the rise of a civil society, the history of ideas, censorship, etc. -- will find compelling. And Blom does justice to his subject, making each character, from the best known (Rousseau, Voltaire) to the most obscure (Diderot's mysterious mistress, 'Sophie' Vallon) remarkably vivid.

There are two few books of this kind - accessible, well-written, thoughtful, well-researched and broad in scope -- and Blom has added yet another to his own personal canon within the genre. (Interestingly, his previous book, To Have and To Hold was a history of collecting objects; this book focuses instead on the collecting but also the dissemination of ideas and concepts and information.) It's a lively history of the times -- you'll almost feel the famous Parisian mud pulling your shoes off as you read about Paris in the middle of the 18th century -- but also a group biography and the history of an endeavor and its legacy.

If you find this book intriguing, you might also be interested in another book about literary ventures and misadventures in 18th century France. As Blom mentions throughout this history, many French writers published in Amsterdam to avoid the royal censors -- their works were later smuggled back into Paris inside barrels of salted herring, among other things -- a form of 18th century samizdat. A good survey of the literary underworld of Diderot's era can be found in The Forbidden Best-Sellers of Pre-Revolutionary France.

The real importance of the Encyclopedie comes to life in this history of its controversies
By Midwest Book Review
What was the real significance of the 'Encyclopedie' by Diderot and d'Alembert? Many will say its size and date of appearance marked it as special: Philipp Blom reveals its significance lie in its blend of politics, honesty and ideas which went against the Church and Crown alike in its effort to provide unbiased truth. Its publication was to underwrite the values of two centuries to come, with philosophers Denis Diderot and Jean-Jacques Rousseau and medical scientist Louis de Jaucourt living through arrest, imprisonment, attacks and more for their achievement. The real importance of the Encyclopedie comes to life in this history of its controversies.

The Intel Trinity: How Robert Noyce, Gordon Moore, and Andy Grove Built the World's Most Important Company, by Michael S. Malone

Based on unprecedented access to the corporation’s archives, The Intel Trinity is the first full history of Intel Corporation—the essential company of the digital age— told through the lives of the three most important figures in the company’s history: Robert Noyce, Gordon Moore, and Andy Grove.

Often hailed the “most important company in the world,” Intel remains, more than four decades after its inception, a defining company of the global digital economy. The legendary inventors of the microprocessor-the single most important product in the modern world-Intel today builds the tiny “engines” that power almost every intelligent electronic device on the planet.

But the true story of Intel is the human story of the trio of geniuses behind it. Michael S. Malone reveals how each brought different things to Intel, and at different times. Noyce, the most respected high tech figure of his generation, brought credibility (and money) to the company’s founding; Moore made Intel the world’s technological leader; and Grove, has relentlessly driven the company to ever-higher levels of success and competitiveness. Without any one of these figures, Intel would never have achieved its historic success; with them, Intel made possible the personal computer, Internet, telecommunications, and the personal electronics revolutions.

The Intel Trinity is not just the story of Intel’s legendary past; it also offers an analysis of the formidable challenges that lie ahead as the company struggles to maintain its dominance, its culture, and its legacy.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The modern semiconductor industry grew out of a faction of dissenting employees of Fairchild Semiconductor often called the Traitorous Eight, who left to form Intel Inc. a risky start-up that was transformed into the most successful technology company of the computer age through the invention of the “computer on a chip” we know as the microprocessor. The story revolves around the three men who founded and led Intel throughout its first four decades—Robert Noyce, Gordon Moore, and Andy Grove, whose canny leadership, impeccable timing, and masterful marketing skills turned a small company with a very unsure future into a global giant. The time line is a familiar one to many technology buffs, but Malone moves past the standard Intel mythology to uncover many aspects of the company’s ascendance that have been glossed over or lost to history. Federico Faggin, an Italian American physicist who led the design group of the first commercial microprocessor, is profiled as one of the “greatest inventors of the century,” one example of how Malone gives long-overdue credit to the unsung heroes and inventors for their contributions. --David Siegfried

Review
“Through extensive and unprecedented access to Intel’s archives, Malone describes how each of these vital members of Intel brought various skills and talents to the company to make it the giant it is today.” (Entrepreneur's 25 Amazing Business Books from 2014)

“This is business history at its best.” (Wall Street Journal)

“What’s been missing is an authoritative work that blends all the key people and the technology with a thorough, up-to-date business history. “The Intel Trinity” fills that gap.” (The Wall Street Journal)

“What he has produced is popular history, the tale of an epoch-defining industrial romp and the three men who led it.” (Washington Post)

“The Intel Trinity is a fine introduction to the founding myths legends of Silicon Valley.” (Salon)

“Richly detailed, swiftly moving work of modern business history, recounting a truly world-changing technology and the people who made it possible. Essential for aspiring entrepreneurs, to say nothing of those looking for a view of how the modern, speed-of-light world came to be.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

“Michael Malone, one of the most interesting chroniclers of Silicon Valley, has produced a fascinating history of Intel. It’s a valuable study of innovation, great leadership, and colorful personalities. Anyone who wants to know how creativity leads to invention should read this wonderful book.” (Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs)

“Few people capture the rhythms and values that fuel Silicon Valley as well as longtime journalist Michael S. Malone. In his latest book, he takes on the history of Intel, a company he started covering when most reporters were still using typewriters. He reveals his deep knowledge on every page.” (Reid Hoffman, cofounder & chairman of LinkedIn and co-author of The Alliance)

“Mike Malone’s book on Bob Noyce, Gordon Moore and Andy Grove - Silicon Valley’s Mount Rushmore - belongs with Walter Isaacson’s treatment of Steve Jobs, Neal Gabler’s opus on Walt Disney, and Tom Wolfe’s look at the first astronauts. Trinity is that big and that good.” (Rich Karlgaard, Publisher and Columnist, Forbes Magazine, Author of The Soft Edge)

“Malone moves past the standard Intel mythology to uncover many aspects of the company’s ascendance that have been glossed over or lost to history. Malone gives long-overdue credit to the unsung heroes and inventors for their contributions.” (Booklist)

From the Back Cover

The definitive history of the Intel Corporation—the essential company of the digital age—told through the lives of its three preeminent figures: Robert Noyce, Gordon Moore, and Andy Grove

Intel has often been hailed as the most important company in the world, and with good reason: While technology companies come and go, Intel remains, more than four decades after its inception, a defining company of the global digital economy. The legendary inventor of the microprocessor—the single most significant product in the modern world—Intel today builds the tiny "engines" that power almost every intelligent electronic device on the planet.

But the true story of Intel is the human story of the three geniuses behind it. In The Intel Trinity, Michael S. Malone takes an unflinching look at the strengths and weaknesses each member of the trio has brought to Intel, and how, without the perfect balance, the company would never have reached its current level of success. Robert Noyce, the most respected high- tech figure of his generation, brought credibility (and money) to the company's founding; Gordon Moore made Intel the world's technological leader; and Andy Grove relentlessly drove the company to ever-higher levels of success and competitiveness. Without any one of these figures, Intel would never have achieved its historic success; with them, Intel made possible the personal computer, the Internet, telecommunications, and the personal electronics revolution.

Based on unprecedented access to corporate archives, The Intel Trinity reveals the fascinating stories behind the company's ubiquitous products and the unique business practices—including a willingness to commit to new ideas, an initiative to make bold investments in lean times, and a devotion to upholding Gordon Moore's namesake law—that led Intel to consistent success unheard of elsewhere in the tech world.

The Intel Trinity is not just the story of Intel's legendary past; it is also an analysis of the formidable challenges that lie ahead as the company struggles to maintain its dominance, its culture, and its legacy.

Wish someone would do a better job writing about these three amazing men, their relationship as well as the company they created
By Avram Miller
I was an executive at Intel from 1984-1999 (Corp. Vice President) and had the honor of knowing Noyce, Moore and Grove. I found the book odd. It was very superficial about so many things and then would go in depth on other things. The section on Andy's early life was overly detailed while there was not enough about Gordon. Frankly, the book feels lazy to me. It felt like Malone just wrote up thing he could easily find. He was suppose to have access to Intel's archives for whatever that is worth. We were thought not to keep much because of legal issues. There were also a number of factual errors.
I did benefit from learning more about the early years at Fairchild.
Hated the title by the way. It is worth reading this book as long as you realize that it is just a piece of the story of these three amazing men and even less a history of Intel.

A Must Read Book
By Harold Kellman
This is a "must have" book for anyone who wants to know about the early history of integrated circuits, the microprocessor, and Silicon Valley. The Valley of Heart's Delight, as it was known before Don Hoefler's 1971 naming, was and is truly an amazing place with remarkable individuals. As a young electrical engineer, I first came out to Palo Alto because there were two minicomputer companies with headquarters within two miles of each other -- Varian Associates and Hewlett-Packard. HP had just gotten into the minicomputer business in 1967 and was eager to sell its new machines. They gave my upstart Ann Arbor-based company $100,000 worth of equipment and 60 days credit terms to pay for it. Our company had a net worth of $3,000 and I was 25 years old. HP had the true Silicon Valley start-up spirit.

The next time I came to the Bay Area was when I read the Electronic News two page advertisement for the 4004 chip on November 15, 1971, "Announcing a new era of integrated electronics -- a micro-programmable computer on a chip." Few believed. None of the 80 or so minicomputer companies, led by Digital Equipment and Data General, took it seriously. Luckily I did and moved here.
Mike Malone perfectly captures this whole era in Part II: Start-Up (1968-1971) and Part III: The Spirit of the Age (1972-1987).

Mike Malone explains the three different personalities of the founders. When you call Andy Grove "paranoid" he certainly was.
Andy believed spies were everywhere. When I went to an analyst meeting and arrived early, I went to the bathroom with my briefcase. A secretary quickly followed me into the bathroom and told me I had to check the briefcase before being allowed into the analyst meeting. I said this was ridiculous and she replied that this was on strict orders from Andy Grove. Another time, when I asked a technical question, Andy Grove prefaced his remark by accusing me of being "a Motorola spy." I made the mistake of saying that the 16-bit Motorola 68000 microprocessor was a superior product. Read Chapter 20, "Crush", in which Mike Malone explains that the great marketing of the microprocessor beat the great engineering of Motorola.

If you weren't in Silicon Valley in the 1970s, 1980s or 1990s, you can capture the spirit by reading this remarkable book.

Important business lessons from Intel's history
By John Gibbs
Intel’s greatest strength has been its willingness to take huge risks, even betting the company, according to Michael Malone in this book. On the occasions when those bets have failed, the company has clawed its way back into the game through superhuman effort and will,... and then immediately gone on to take yet more risks.

The story starts in September 1957 when the “Traitorous Eight” employees of Shockley Transistor left to form their own company, which became Fairchild Semiconductor. When Fairchild started falling apart a decade later, two of its key scientists and leaders, Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore, decided to start a new business, and Andy Grove joined them as their first employee at Intel. The book goes on to describe Intel’s ups and downs over the ensuing 45 years.

Gordon Moore had first observed in 1965 that the complexity of integrated circuits was doubling every year, and in the 1970s the doubling of computer chip performance every two years became known as Moore’s Law. Intel Corporation, as the keeper of Moore’s Law, proceeded over the next several decades to innovate at the required rate, using a combination of science and business cunning to stay ahead of its competitors.

It is a well-crafted story, although perhaps a bit longer than necessary. Intel seems to have “come roaring out” or “come roaring back” after downturns quite a few times, and the traits of some characters get repeated a bit. I have no personal knowledge of the key individuals, but can’t help suspecting that they have been a little bit stereotyped. For example, I suspect that Andy Grove’s attitude towards Bob Noyce was more nuanced than the animosity portrayed by the author.

Notwithstanding these minor issues, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Intel Corporation has had a profound effect not only on the field of electronics but on the world as a whole. It has been one of the key players in the digital revolution, and there is a great deal to learn from the manner in which the company has been run, and its successes and failures over the years.

Winner of the 2016 Outstanding Book Award presented by the Society of Professors of Education
Building on her book Revealing Whiteness, Shannon Sullivan identifies a constellation of attitudes common among well-meaning white liberals that she sums up as white middle-class goodness, an orientation she critiques for being more concerned with establishing anti-racist bona fides than with confronting systematic racism and privilege. Sullivan untangles the complex relationships between class and race in contemporary white identity and outlines four ways this orientation is expressed, each serving to establish one s lack of racism: the denigration of lower-class white people as responsible for ongoing white racism, the demonization of antebellum slaveholders, an emphasis on colorblindness especially in the context of white childrearing and the cultivation of attitudes of white guilt, shame, and betrayal. To move beyond these distancing strategies, Sullivan argues, white people need a new ethos that acknowledges and transforms their whiteness in the pursuit of racial justice rather than seeking a self-righteous distance from it."

Review
Sullivan posits that it is white liberals own anti-racism that actually perpetuates racism by shutting down frank or nuanced discussions not only of race, but of white privilege, which created racial problems and still sustains them In advising white liberals how to honestly live their whiteness, rather than disown it or pretend it doesn t exist, Sullivan expertly deconstructs the familiar defenses Like W.E.B. DuBois and James Baldwin before her, Sullivan sees white domination as a spiritual problem that afflicts one group in particular but that touches us all. "Ms. Magazine""

[Sullivan s] work is so far-reaching and thought-provoking that it is hard to imagine any reader finishing "Good White People" without having reexamined stale emotions and come to new realizations. "Bookslut"

"Good White People" is undoubtedly a major contribution to critical race and feminist theory Sullivan directly challenges the feelings of paralysis that many white people feel when we think about our complicity in racism, showing us ways forward that call for our agency. It is well worth reading. "Hypatia"

Excellent Rare Insights
By British5
This is an excellent analysis of modern (post-modern) middle-class liberal thought processes. As Shannon Sullivan points out, these four major categories of distancing oneself from toxic portions of American history are unconscious. More importantly, making these items conscious such that we can cast light on the darkness of "colorblind" approaches demands that we face the issues so as to grow (hopefully) towards a less racist society. Ms. Sullivan's candor and precise--sometimes cutting-- observances are admirably displayed with humility. I am thrilled to discover such an esoteric and intellectual writer who is simultaneously contributing to a field (critical race theory) which has the potential to make such tangible differences in our lives.

Great book!
By mosesdavis
This book is amazing. I teach in a masters program in higher education at Penn State and Love this book. Sullivan is spot on. My students who read it were angered and challenged by it, and they loved it!

This is a necessary but not always a comfortable read. The peeling of the onion is never easy.
