Are we Ready for Change?

This book is a collection of 25 articles edited by Paul Sloan.

I like article books since you can pick them up for a few minutes and return to them easily later.

First we need to define Crowdsourcing (even though the book defined open innovation first which is the flow of ideas in and out of the organization as opposed to just within it).

"Crowd Sourcing is the act of taking a job traditionally performed by an employee and outsourcing it to an undefined larger group in the form of an open call"

To make the process work well, the project needs to be well defined. The problem description is key. And the communication process needs to be well oiled.

Much of the challenge in implementing OI is the fear of change and the "old" systems that are in place already. Most companies have a fear of letting trade secrets out the door. Many companies think if they did not invent it inside their company, it is not good.

The obvious advantage of OI is the larger number of views that can focus on the problem. Different perspectives are often great in solving any problem. When someone is too close to the problem, sometimes the fail to see the best, simplest or most obvious solution.

And of course there is an article on Intellectual Property rights. This alone might scare some companies off.

I love crowdsourcing but have some worries that we may end up trying to commodicise (its my new verb - to make into a commodity) innovation. Although this is problem for those trying to innovate, this is not why I worry about it. I worry that we may end up in a world where no one takes the time to truly think in depth about things. I know I already have that problem. I cannot remember the last time I spent full focus time for 3 hours at a time.

Crowdsourcing dramatically increases the value of analysts - the ones who can define the problem.

The relevancy of A guide to open innovation and crowdsourcing

Having noticed my passionate blogging about innovation in customer service, Kogan Page offered me to ship A Guide to open innovation and crowdsourcing. And yes, I promised to write my thoughts and impressions.

Open innovation and crowd sourcing are amongst the hottest topics in strategy and management in the last 5 years.

The concepts of collaboration and outsourcing are fundamental to the success of open innovation and crowd sourcing.

Having a background in system development, I believe that the the concept of capturing innovative ideas for innovation in a hub of collaboration, together with the outsourcing of tasks to a large group of people or community is a logical evolution. Quality management, system development and process management are examples of business practices that heavily depend on capturing ideas from internal or external staff members.

Does this make "A Guide to Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing" less relevant for me?

Some claim that Open Innovation is just a hype. Stefan Lindegaard recently wrote why the open innovation hype is good thing. As a citizen and a customer service professional I favor anything that can convince authorities management, leadership and employees to improve and innovate. And be sure, editor Paul Sloane and the advice from leading experts like Braden Kelley, Hutch Carpenter and Andrea Meyer do deliver tips, advices and examples in a - for me - convincing way.

As stated before, Jim Collins once wrote very well: "Whether you prevail or fall, endure or die, depends more on what you do to yourself than on what the world does to you". Neglecting open innovation and crowd sourcing as fundamental concepts (and not limited to innovation) or acting: it is up to you.

The guide offers you to explore the field and gives examples, what challenges companies met and how they were overcome. And those who are familiar with change management of personal effectiveness approaches, may find similar approaches in some of the chapters. With the valuable extension of how these concepts can be applied more effective in a networked environment or crowd sourcing approach.

One minor flaw for me is that - being a service professional - I missed the application of crowd sourcing and innovation in the service economy, customer services or professional services.

Lots of cases that inspires one, presented simply. Based on the chosen approach, as a reader I enjoyed the many perspectives as outlined by all contributing experts.

This book is recommended reading for anyone who is interested in connecting to the changing context in our business world. It is then up to you how that knowledge and information will be applied by you to achieve business or professional.

Great book featuring some of the leading minds in Innovation and Crowdsourcing all in one place.

Although each chapter is written and presented by different experts, the author has done an excellent job in framing all these varied viewpoints into a single collection by adding just enough of his own expertise to make the entire book read cohesively and smoothly.

I especially like the order that the book is divided into with chapters that take the reader starting with the basics of "What is Open Innovation?" and "What is Crowdsourcing?", onto both strategic and tactical topics such as "The Importance of a Strategic Approach to Open Innovation","Bridging Open Innovation Gaps", "Building the Culture for Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing" and many more - all the way to "Envisioning the Future of Innovation."

If you are interested in the topics of Innovation and Crowdsourcing, this book delivers the opportunity to get some of the latest expert insights on both subjects in one single volume. It also serves as a great frame of reference of "who's who" among the top Innovation thought leaders in case you are interested in researching more on those topics.

About the Author

Peter G. Northouse, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Communication in the School of Communication at Western Michigan University. In addition to publications in professional journals, he is the author of Leadership: Theory and Practice (now in its seventh edition) and Introduction to Leadership: Concepts and Practice (now in its third edition) and coauthor of Health Communication: Strategies for Health Professionals (now in its third edition). His scholarly and curricular interests include models of leadership, leadership assessment, ethical leadership, and leadership and group dynamics. For more than 30 years, he has taught courses in leadership, interpersonal communication, and organizational communication to both undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, he is a consultant and lecturer on trends in leadership research, leadership development, and leadership education. He holds a doctorate in speech communication from the University of Denver, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in communication education from Michigan State University.

The diagrams are excellent, the book itself well-organized

Purchased this for a class and found it very understandable and well-written. The diagrams are excellent, the book itself well-organized, and the case studies great for testing understanding of concepts. The absolute best part, however, is that every chapter provides a great section on strengths and weaknesses of the story. My only complaint is that the chapters never start with a very brief summary of what the theory it's covering is, so occasionally I'd finish a chapter and not really be sure I was getting the overall idea right (also made studying difficult when I'd be sitting there going "Now which theory is that again?")

Only If Required

I had to buy this book for a set of leadership classes for my Graduate program. It was okay. It offers a lot of information that is helpful when learning about the many different leadership styles but it did not keep my attention for long. I found many areas boring, redundant and useless. I would have liked to have seen the leadership styles applied to today's contemporary and global world but it lacks good examples. I lost interest quickly and was thankful to get to the end of a chapter.

It does offer great information about leadership styles, it was just hard to read and stay focused.

The time promised for me to receive this book arrived much earlier than the time given. The quality of the product is beyond excellent condition. It was truly worth the price because in the book store they wanted $68 for this book and I think I only paid $29 which included the book plus shipping. I highly recommend this seller.

Lately as I have been rereading texts by such writers and thinkers as Alexandra Kollontai, Rosa Luxemburg and later analysis of their thinking by Raya Dunayevskaya, I ask myself the same question people ask me, perplexed as they see that I am reading something so "outdated" about a system that was "proven wrong": is this information relevant today, aside from the historical perspective gained from it? Yes, I argue that it is very relevant. It proves, if nothing else, that issues, particularly for women, that were issues 100 years ago are still issues today. Many societies have made little or no social progress, and some have arguably moved backwards.

This particular book, with analysis from Alix Holt, is quite useful and telling because Holt provides a context and an even-handed critique of Kollontai's writing. Kollontai has been dismissed by many as an overly idealistic thinker, and her thoughts on family and sexuality have earned Kollontai an undeserved reputation as someone who advocated sexual promiscuity and irresponsibility as well as "moral decay". Naturally these analyses are overly simplistic; Kollontai was a revolutionary (not just in the traditional sense, having participated actively in the Russian Revolution and serving as Lenin's only female commissar, but also a revolutionary on social norms and sociology). Kollontai questioned the role of family in society and predicted that "family" as the nuclear unit would cease to exist (under socialism/Communism, in her evaluation) because family is an economic/need-based construct. The erosion of the family unit as economic unit would change the dynamics between men and women and would create the need for in depth evaluation of sexuality and the basis for relationships. Kollontai asked many questions on this topic in earnest, which were integral questions to the development of Soviet society (beset by major problems as it was) yet as time went on, her ideas were marginalized and even demonized. As the Soviet propaganda machine grew (mostly under Stalin), Kollontai no longer had a voice. Suddenly these ideas, in the words of Alix Holt, "became more and more preposterous and the party quite sensibly put its foot down. In actual fact, things were quite otherwise, for her ideas changed very little. It was the attitudes of men and women both inside and outside the party that were changing and giving rise to objections against what had previously been accepted without question." Kollontai watched the Revolution for which she had fought (and in the name of which she had been blind and naive to many realities) be co-opted by the Stalin personality cult and excessive bureaucracy. It is evident that Kollontai was a personality more than a philosopher. She had beliefs and ideas, but she, as Holt points out in later analysis, failed to form her observations into real and meaningful analysis. Many of her most striking ideas are barely developed. Kollontai objected to being linked with a women's movement or a feminist movement in her time because she felt that women's rights would be part and parcel of any successful proletarian revolution, and that equality would be achieved automatically. This is part of Kollontai's short-sightedness, faithfully documented in this book and analyzed by Holt. Kollontai had valuable ideas she never researched or explored fully; she recognized intrinsic problems within society (particularly those pertaining to women and children), but she blindly accepted that the revolution and the Soviet government would take care of all these things. By the time she realized that the "dream" was slipping away, it was too late. Stalin had the power to silence her one way or another (she is one of the few to survive the purges, although it can be argued that she was sidelined effectively by being sent as Soviet ambassador to Norway, Mexico, etc.)

This book coupled with other readings about or by Kollontai give a vivid picture of Russia during and after the revolution and the hopes many people shared for building a worker's society. The book also illustrates, as I stated, how the same concerns that Kollontai and colleagues faced in forming a new government still plague society today. Although strides have been made in "granting" women more equality, they are still not "equal" in many regards. Kollontai, who was so ahead of her time, gives modern women pause to consider that if serious feminist and equality matters are STILL problematic now, almost 100 years after Kollontai was fighting for the equality of all people, we have not really "blazed the trail" to women's rights. At the same time, though, it is not just society "holding women back" but also the attitudes of many women themselves. (For example, Bill Maher said that when women want to elect a woman to the US presidency, they will. They have the majority. It is not society necessarily that isn't ready; perhaps it's women themselves.) Unfortunately Kollontai faced an uphill battle educating people as to their individual rights and responsibilities... we still face this issue now. Relevant? Absolutely so.

Not the basis for the new TV show of the same name but a fun read nonetheless

I knew this book wasn't the basis of the new television show by the same name before I started reading it but the synopsis sounded interesting so I thought I'd give it a try.

I watched the first show of the new ABC television series last week starring Kiefer Sutherland and loved it so I went searching on Amazon to see if it was perhaps based on an existing book. No such luck but I did find this book.

The TV show is character based (how could it not be starring Sutherland) while this story is based more on the mechanics and "what ifs" of some disaster happening while most of the country's leadership is gathered in one place. And then it focuses on the hunt for the terrorists that did the dirty deed.

I enjoyed this book although at times it seemed implausible but then that's why I read fiction. If I want truly impossible, I watch the evening news or watch the presidential debates.

This was an enjoyable quick read with enough twists and turns to hold my interest and just enough character development to care about what happened to at least some of the characters.

It is a well-written, pastoral application of seemingly incompressible visions. Dr. Parkinson’s book is as pithy as a coach’s comments to a sports team taking on a powerful opposing team – and as gentle as a friend urging another to take the next step on an unknown path.

Tapestry is “a redressed series of sermons” he preached in the fall of 2005 – sermons, I heard. What I heard then was both challenging and comforting, given the times through which we were living, post 9/11. How much more valuable are they now, ten years later!

Dr. Parkinson wants us to develop a faith for the real world – “But real-world faith requires that we first see the world.” (Tapestry, page 5) That was the reason God revealed His view of the world to John, who used “word pictures [to] describe characteristics of the entire age of the gospel expansion that culminates in the return of Christ and his establishment of Paradise.”

The picture may have made more sense to a first century saint than a twenty-first century one – but the whole message is quite simple.

"[P]ersevere though terrible tribulation until Christ returns to bring new age to replace the one we are in. That’s it. That’s the message of Revelation, and it’s all in the first three chapters.

The rest of the book burns this message into our souls." (page 9)

He writes that reading Revelation is like walking blindfolded beside John down a long corridor as describes to us a series of paintings – or tapestries, like the Bayeux Tapestry – a handbook, if you will of the Norman Conquest. Dr. Parkinson doesn’t attach what John saw to a timeline, whether he was on Patmos, or transported into the Throne Room. God showed John the Church, and the tribulation as the gospel expands, until the Lord returns. (p. 16)

As we must keep an open Bible when pastors preach, keep your Bible open when you plow through these nine chapters – and be willing to dig! Commentaries may be useful – but Dr. Parkinson’s approach is reading the book of Revelation for we are at war, even if the days seem tranquil.

Christ told his people to be ready for his return – for our well-being in hard times. (Matthew 24:42-44)

Turn that around and you have the message of Revelation: until Christ comes back, this is what our world will look like. So stay faithful until he returns.

"And return he will. The horsemen will trample, the false prophet will preach lies, the beast will roar and the prostitute will seduce until all seems lost.

Then, out of nowhere, a bugle will sound the charge." (p.99)

Masterfully done! A view of the end times in a very logical sense. Not so much about trying to establish a time line but realistically a look at the Christian faith and God's requirement that we stay faithful and endure until his return. A very refreshing and logical read.

About the Author
David Carroll grew up as a fan of these broadcasters and was fortunate enough to become a friend and colleague to many of them. Sci-Fi take it to the next level

All Tomorrows Zombies offers a great variety of sci fi horror / zombie worlds. I used this book to drop zombies into my Star War RPG. I also have ran the AFMBE game world and this would be a fantastic expansion to the core rules. Because of the d20 conversion it was very easy to use his product with other rules sets. (I'm also going to buy Dungeons & Zombies and then drop that into my Pathfinder game.) It's packed with ideas, so even if you just need inspiration, this book has it. Excellent choice, buy this right now!

Not what I expected

I am currently studying the Victorian period and bought this book hoping to explore, in greater depth, the social aspects of the Victorian culture. This book has a more philisophical approach than I expected or would have preferred. I did not get a clear picture of the social dynamic of the victorian people - rather I had questions thrown at me left and right: is there a god; are humans naturally good or bad and on and on. These are not things that interest me and reading about them was certainly not my objective in selecting this book. This book is great if you're interested in philisophy and and you'd like to explore mindsets of different periods. I was hoping to read about social issues: the way Victorians were affected by them and how they lived as a result. This book - as is the case with many philisophical books - gives more questions than answers. The author's style of writing was also a turn off - he quoted too much and the things he quoted were unnecessary: he could have easily used his own words and spared me the agony of realizing that I was sifting through a bunch of verbose crap. The only reason that I am so negative about this book is because I have seen better and I expectged more of this book. For my purposes this book was unhelpful and a waste of time. Many of the philisophical points made are ones that would logically be attributed to these people when learning the social history of the Victrian era. It is not necessary to read this book to grasp the Victorian mindset. This book is good for people who enjoy a philisophical format.

A Monument of Intellectual History

First published in 1957 with the intent to show some of the roots of the "modern mind" (which was then still recovering from McCarthyism), Walter Houghton's book more than accomplishes its stated goals. THE VICTORIAN FRAME OF MIND is divided in to three parts in which Houghton examines Victorian emotional, intellectual and moral attitudes. He bases these discussions on the premise that 1830-1870 was an "age of transition," and that the Victorian English were the first to think of their own time as "an era of change FROM the past TO the future."
The Victorians found the pace of their life compared to that of their grandfathers to be inordinately fast, they both lamented and welcomed the breakdown of old regimes and the coming into its own of the Industrial Revolution. Darwin's theory of evolution made thousands of them quake in their boots--even though so many of them were raised on a wrathful God more than a loving God, the prospect of no God at all sent many running for the metaphorical hills. Throughout the book, Houghton extensively quotes the Victorians themselves (e.g. Ruskin, Arnold, Carlyle, Charles Kingsley) and it is shocking and uncanny how many times what was written a good 150 years ago resembles what you might find in the press and literature of today. This from 1851: "everybody has his own little ISM . . . by which the country can be saved." How about this line from Carlyle's PAST AND PRESENT: "we have profoundly forgotten everywhere that Cash-payment is not the sole relation of human beings."
A key to understanding how Victorians thought about themselves and their world, Houghton points out, lies in accepting the many contradictions and tensions of the age, most importantly their overwhelming optimism balanced against their high level of anxiety. Of the book's fourteen chapters, particularly interesting and provocative are those on "The Critical Spirit--and The Will to Believe," "The Commercial Spirit," "Dogmatism," and "Hypocrisy."
Houghton admits from the start that he's out for the "general sense" of how people thought, and he narrows his purview even further to the literate classes. He therefore makes many sweeping statements that could still meet with criticism--even with the quotations he provides from the writers of the time. THE VICTORIAN FRAME OF MIND is still a useful background text for scholars, though it might put off those with ISMs on their shoulders. Moreover, it is a rich and engaging book for the student or amateur of the Victorian era, which, while different in several important ways from our own American society, is all too eerily similar when you come right down to it. Highly recommended!

The Pragamatic and Uncertain Victorians

This book could just as well be called The Modern Frame of Mind or more generally The Western Frame of Mind for the issues that perplexed and divided the Victorians have always perplexed and divided westerners and continue to do so. Religion and Science have never been compatible realms of thought and western civilization has always been marked by an unresolved tension between the two. The eighteenth-century is often refered to as the Age of Reason but reason alone does not fulfill all of mans needs and the Romantic period that followed marked a return to faith and feeling. The Victorian Age is marked by a restless search to find a balance between the reasoning head and the feeling heart and soul. Houghton sees the English as a very pragmatic people and though he is careful to show that on no issue did any two Victorians think alike, he does show that the English shared certain habits of mind. Houghton does not mention Nationalism by name but that word was constantly in my mind as I read this book for Houghton shows that the English were aware that they shared certain characteristics with each other which made them distinct from say the French. After 1789 the English saw the French as nation destroyers while they saw themselves as nation builders -- the fact that they defeated the French and presided over the building of the largest empire the world had ever known made them acutely aware that they were part of a special breed. The most famous men of the age did not merely speak to the English masses but preached to them -- and that tone and style of speaking is perhaps even more important and revealing than the actual substance of what they were saying for the English felt they were on a mission. Precislely what kind of mission they were on was impossible to say with any certainty but for a spell the Victorians felt they were a model nation and thus the nation in the best position to mold other nations. This confidence or arrogance peaked around mid-century and by centuries end Englands moment had passed as other nations(USA & Germany) began to dominate the world stage. Historians explain empires in a number of ways, Houghton however is not the kind of historian to make any sweeping generalizations. How such a small island nation could come to rule the globe is something he never tries to answer. He confines himself to analyzing the Victorians patterns of thought for it is the Victorian personality that captures his interest. This is the kind of thoroughly researched book(Houghton quotes from every major text of the era) that gives you a look into the workings of a half dozen exemplary personalities and how they worked through the issues of the day for themselves. Houghton gives extended consideration to the works of Carlyle, Ruskin,Arnold, Mill, Tennyson, Browning, Dickens, &Eliot but he quotes from other lesser lights as well. My personal favorite from this era is John Stuart Mill and the man who introduced the pragmatic Victorians to French Fiction, Walter Pater. Houghton's strength is when he concentrates on the men and women of letters but he is slightly less successful when he deals with what life was like for the average Victorian. Houghton portrays the English as a people in search of a creed and the writers of the age as men who tried to fashion a creed for them. For me the men of letters come across loud and clear but I wanted more concerning the life of the common man and woman ie how many Victorians actually read Carlyle, Arnold etc.....
Also recommended: Asa Brigg's Age of Improvement(this classic scholarly 500 page book is especially good at dealing with economics, social dynamics, and the goings-on within Parliament) & G.M. Young's Portrait of an Age(this 200 page book especially good at giving you an overview of the entire age-- Young's approach is less scholarly than modern students might be used to but he integrates a lot of information into a short and immensely readable book).
