Taste of the inner meaning of martial arts

This small book leaves me begging for more. It relates tales teaching the inner meaning of the martial arts. It is divided into the following sections. 1. The message of the stories. 2. On the threshold of the mystery. 3. Confronting the mountain. 4. The snare of appearences. 5. The great test. 6. Lessons of the Zen masters. 7. Winning without fighting. 8. The ultimate secret. For those who are interested in the martial arts as a path for self development and realisation rather than just as a 'grab em and bash em' exercise in futility, this book will be a treasure for you. The martial arts have traditionally passed on its ethos and morality through tales such as these.
Many of these tales were already familiar to me as our Sensei recounts some at each training session, more or less. The book only has one major drawback, there isnt enough of it. It left me wanting more.

The Inward Journey

Sometimes a book shows up at a crucial moment, the missing piece of the puzzle. This is that book. For those of you that were attracted to the martial arts because of the spiritual and philosophical underpinnings behind them, this book is for you. This is Taoism and Zen through the lens of martial arts.

This is not a collection of morality tales. This is a deep plunge into sobering reality based on real events. The short stories take place in China and Japan. Reminiscent of the book, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones Classic Edition: A Collection of Zen and Pre-Zen Writings, it can serve as a guidebook on the inward journey. Some of the stories are humorous, others are quite sobering. Many are tales about Samurai. Three stories use an animal as a substitute for the actual student, such as a very talented ape, a fighting rooster and a cat.

It is amazing how the writer, Pascal Fauliot, can take so complex a subject and make it easy to understand. He can write of great mysteries, exposing the bare elements. The narrative is simple and straight forward. In "Confronting the Mountain", the opening pages of this chapter speak eloquently of the human condition. This book is a gem, translated from the French by Jon Graham.

Neat book, compelling and thoughtful

This set of vignettes is not only fun to read but it really does make you think. Fast paced, clear writing in a style that is reminiscent of Dave Lowry. You don't have to be a martial artist to enjoy it though you will probably get more out of it if you are.

A Guy's Perspective on "The Broken Way"

"The Broken Way" is a guide into abundant life through self-sacrifice.

A logical progression from Ann's first book, The New York Times best-selling "One Thousand Gifts," this new book answers the question "How do you live with your one broken heart?"

Let me pause here to say that I am probably one of the few men who have read this book. This doesn't give me any more credibility than anyone else, but it does provide a rarer perspective on this book. Ann has struck a chord with women because she writes so vulnerably and openly about pain, loss, grief, and the thousand trials and joys of home life. Our culture--to its loss--seems to discourage men from probing their emotions, evaluating their relationships, or spending reflective time considering the state of their heart and their soul. This is a tragedy which can be overcome one man at a time.

"The Broken Way" is not just for women and it is not just for stay-at-home parents--it is for anyone who has experienced brokenness; anyone who needs to learn how to live with a broken heart, not just limping through life, but living joyfully and abundantly. It is for anyone who believes that Christ is the Great Physician and that He Himself is our peace. It is for both women and men.

I read widely and this is one of just two or three books which has helped me to change the way I live even while I'm still reading it. Her first book 1000 gifts helped me through the journey with cancer with my 14 year old daughter...this book The Broken Way, is helping me live without her and allows me to be honest about my brokenness. Everyone is broken, hurting, dealing with loss and disappointment...how do we live with a broken heart? Give it away...
I highly recommend this book for you and for anyone in your life that needs help healing and encouragement. Ann brilliantly and poetically crafts profound and inspiring words in a way that pierces and comforts your heart all at once.

Blessings come from brokenness

All of my life I have felt broken because of all the pain inflicted on me. I considered myself to be ugly, defeated, and stupid because of my brokenness. So I lived my life as a useless broken woman. That is, until I read TheBrokenWay.
AnnVoskamp writes in such a descriptive way that she draws you into her story of brokenness and she opened my eyes to realize how God uses our broken story for His glory.
I no longer feel ugly when a situation breaks me, I feel blessed with anticipation to see how God makes all things new.
AnnVoskamp changed my life with her book AThousandGifts and now she's transformed my thought process with TheBrokenWay.

Large Collection of Tunes

Although there are many songs in this collection, the piano accompaniment is, I believe, way to simple. There are single notes in the bass clef. For those of you that require a lower level of expertise to play the tunes, this book is for you. The music does, however, have guitar cords notated.

Hard to find

The Maranatha! Music books have been out of print for some time, and are hard to find at a reasonable price. I purchased this for my sister, who plays piano at her church every Sunday. She wore her old one out, and was looking for a replacement. She loves the hymns and was very excited to receive one in such good condition. The spiral binders tend to lose pages with extended use over time. I recieved this book quickly and in the good condition I expected.

Just what I've been looking for!

We recently purchased a keyboard for our children who are taking lessons, and I've been wanting to play but have no music. I'm used to playing from one that my mother has, which is another edition with a red cover, but had a hard time finding it. This is very similar, and I'm having a great time playing from it. It came in a timely manner and is in very good condition! Thanks!

This is an outstanding bible book for toddlers and preschoolers. The illustrations are endearing and the stories are simple but "on the mark." I especially love the use of the actual bible verse in adult wording following each story. Please bring it back!

I LOVE this book!

The pictures are plentiful and delightful! With only a few lines to read on each page, this book holds the attention of my three small children. Although it is simple enough for a very young child, I enjoy reading it as well. It is a favorite book in our home and we are sure to wear it out before my children are five.
It includes the following parables of Jesus: The Lost Sheep, The Pearl of Great Price, The Two Sons, The Foolish Man and The Wise Man, The Ten Silver Coins, The Eye of the Needle, The Good Samaratin, and The Rich Farmer.
